CAC Announces April 14 Weekly Awards For Golf, Tennis And Track & Field
York senior JIMMY DeCASTRO (Mantoloking, N.J./Gov. Livingston), York senior TIM MOWRER (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley), Mary Washington senior BECKY MORSE-KARZEN (Wilmette, Ill./NewTrier), Mary Washington junior JASON DRISCOLL (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and Wesley freshman TIARA BROOKS (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) were selected as the CAC Athletes of the Week for April 14, 2009.
GOLF
York senior JIMMY DeCASTRO (Mantoloking, N.J./Gov. Livingston) was named the CAC Golf Athlete of the Week after leading the Spartans to their third tournament championship of the 2008-09 season. DeCastro carded a six-over-par 77 to tie for sixth place out of 99 players in the Elizabethtown Spring Invitational at Hershey East C.C.
SPECIAL MENTION: Wesley junior CHRIS OSBERG (Amherst, Va./Amherst) posted a two-day total of 157 (78-79) to tie for 18th place overall in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Invitational at Hershey East C.C.
MEN'S TENNIS
York senior TIM MOWRER (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) was named the CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to victories over CAC rivals Hood and Wesley. In the win over Hood, Mowrer combined with Colin Jones to notch a 8-6 win in the first doubles match. He followed that with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Carter Reitman in the first singles match. Against Wesley, Mowrer recorded a 6-1, 6-1 first singles win over Mickey DeSouza. For the season, Mowrer is 11-4 at first singles and 8-6 in doubles play.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Mary Washington senior BECKY MORSE-KARZEN (Wilmette, Ill./NewTrier) was named the CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping the 10th-ranked Eagles to shutout victories over St. Mary's and Salisbury. In the win over St. Mary's, Morse-Karzen won at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Kate Malpeli to win at one doubles, 8-1. In the win at Salisbury, Morse-Karzen won at one singles, 6-3, 6-0, and at one doubles, 8-2.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Mary Washington junior JASON DRISCOLL (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was named the CAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week after becoming the first runner in school history to post sub-four minutes performance for the 1,500-meter run. Driscoll covered the distance in 3:59.73 at Lynchburg College, breaking the record of 4:00.29 set by Jason Hough in 2004.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Wesley freshman TIARA BROOKS (Felton, Del./Lake
Forest) was named the CAC Women's Track & Field
Athlete Of The Week after breaking the school record in the
200-meter dash and tying the record for 100 meters at the Rowan
open. Brooks ran the 200-meter in 28.02, over 0.7 seconds faster
than the old record. She followed it up with a 13.84 in the
100-meter, tying the school record in the event in the second year
of the program at the Division III level.
