Andrew Cox, Stacey Malarkey, Brittany Therres And Kylor Berkman Win CAC Weekly Awards
Mary Washington Sr. RHP ANDREW COX (Orlando, Fla./Trinity), Salisbury senior 2B STACEY MALARKEY (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key), York freshman P/DH BRITTANY THERRES (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) and Salisbury senior midfielder KYLOR BERKMAN (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) were selected as the CAC Athletes of the Week for their respective sports for April 27, 2009.
BASEBALL
Mary Washington Sr. RHP ANDREW COX (Orlando, Fla./Trinity) was named the CAC Baseball Player of the Week after throwing a four-hit, complete-game shutout against North Carolina Wesley, which recently won the USA South Conference title. Cox walked one and struck out five in the 3-0 victory. He started the week by being named the UMW Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year co-winner with track & field All-American Justin German.
SOFTBALL
Salisbury senior 2B STACEY MALARKEY (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) along with York freshman P/DH BRITTANY THERRES (Hughesville, Md./Thomas Stone) were named the CAC Softball Co-Players of the Week.
Malarkey went 5-for-10 and reached base twice when being hit by a pitch to lead the 14th-ranked Sea Gulls to a pair of DH sweeps, extending the conference champions' win streak to 30 games. Malarkey had five RBI, six runs scored, two doubles and her conference-leading 11th homer of the season. She also leads NCAA Div. III by being hit by a pitch 16 times this season.
Therres led York to two wins in four games this week. In a DH sweep vs. DeSales, she went the distance in a 4-1 win, allowing just five hits and no walks while fanning two. In the nightcap, she pitched the final two-thirds of the game to get the save in a 4-3 win. In the twinbill, she was 4-for-6 at the plate with a double, run scored and stolen base. In a DH vs. Messiah, she suffered a 1-0 setback in game one, scattering eight hits and two walks while fanning three in seven innings.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Salisbury senior midfielder KYLOR BERKMAN (Salisbury,
Md./Parkside) was named the CAC Men's Lacrosse Player of
the Week after scoring a game-high four goals and adding an assist
in the Sea Gulls' 12-11 win over Washington College in the annual
"War on the Shore." The 2008 national Player of the Year and
two-time national Midfielder of the Year assisted on the game-tying
goal with 10 minutes leftin the game, then scored the unassisted
game-winner with 4:34 left.
