Cox, German, Morse-Karzen Win UMW Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards
University of Mary Washington seniors Andrew
Cox (Orlando, Fla./Trinity), Justin
German (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg), and Becky
Morse-Karzen (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) have been named as
the 2009 UMW Scholar-Athletes of the Year, as was announced at the
UMW Athletics Banquet recently.
Cox, a right-handed pitcher for the baseball team, carries a 3.57
overall GPA in his biology major, and has been the ace of the
baseball staff for the past two seasons. In 2008, he gained All-CAC
and all-region honorsafter going 9-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 13
appearances with four complete games. This season, he is 6-4 with a
2.88 ERA, with four complete games.
Sharing the men's scholar athlete award with Cox is Justin German.
A star in track and field, German gained All-America honors in the
high jump this winter, clearing a season-best six feet, 8.75
inches. He carries a 3.64 GPA as a political science major.
Morse-Karzen has led the Mary Washington tennis team to four
straight CAC championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances,
helping the Eagles to advance further in her first three years, all
the way to the national quarterfinals a year ago. A four-time
All-American, Morse-Karzen boasts a 3.64 GPA in her Spanish and
Education majors.
