Hood Athletic Department Inducts 12 In 2010 Chi Alpha Sigma National Scholar-Athlete Honor Society

The Hood College athletic department welcomed 12 new inductees and three returning honorees into the 2010 class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the nation's first scholar-athlete honor society, in a ceremony at the Marx Center Sunday afternoon.

Additionally, the Hood College Athletic Department paid tribute to its 45 graduating seniors from its 19 varsity teams and one club team Sunday evening at the Whitaker Campus Center.

A total of nine juniors and three seniors comprised the 2010 Chi Alpha Sigma induction class, representing the second Hood College class to earn this prestigious honor. Inductees must maintain at least a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average as a junior or senior and have earned a varsity letter in their sport.

In addition, three seniors from the inaugural 2009 class, women's soccer player Laura Hines, men's soccer player Adam Gilbert and track and field standout Jessica Stanley, were recognized as well for meeting the academic requirements once again in 2009-10.

All new inductees received a commemorative certificate, while the junior inductees received a Chi Alpha Sigma pin and the senior received a Chi Alpha Sigma medallion to wear at commencement.

Juniors
A three-year letterwinner on the lacrosse team and management major, Kelsey Blackwell
A three-year member of the field hockey team and management major, Katelyn Bramkamp
A three-year runner on the track and field team and computer science major, Ola Komolafe
A three-year letterwinner on the soccer team and mathematics major, Derrick Kuhn
A three-year member of the track and field team and communications major, Kayla Murphy
A two-year member of the softball team who also lettered in basketball and biochemistry major, Bridgette Ringley
A three-year member of the volleyball team and management major, Kristina Straub
A three-year member of the tennis team and communications major, Phil Yerby
A two-sport athlete who played two years of softball before switching to track and field this year and history major, Krista Zerby

Seniors

A two-year member of the cross country team and environmental science and policy major, Emily Brownlee
A two-year member of the swim team and management major, Chris Moreland
A two-sport athlete in four-year starter in field hockey and lacrosse and elementary/special education major, Brandy Noel

Sunday evening, each head coach or staff representative shared memories and offered well wishes to each of their respective senior student-athletes. Then nine outstanding senior student-athletes were presented with departmental honors in seven categories, including the Coach's Award, Dean's Award, Kim Servedio Award, President's Award, Scholar-Athlete Award, Trustees' Award and Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award.

Below is a list of the departmental award winners. 

Coach’s Award
The Coach’s Award is given to a current male and female student-athlete who personifies the philosophies of being a Division III student-athlete and the Hood College athletic motto: mind, body and spirit.


The male recipient is Shawn Fernholz, a four-year starter for the men’s soccer team.
The female recipient is Erica Hamor, a two-sport athlete in swimming and track and field.
 
Dean’s Award
This award is given to a current student-athlete who has shown an unparalleled commitment to the student body through involvement in extra-curricular activities and desire to make a difference at Hood College.

The recipient is Carlin Rabie, who has earned letters for the soccer and swim teams during his four years at Hood.
 
Kim Servedio Award
The Kim Servedio Award is given in honor of a former women’s soccer player who passed away tragically in 1998. The award is given to a current student-athlete who best embodies Kim’s characteristics of sincerity, selflessness and optimism.

The recipient is Lauren Perzan, a four-year starter on the field hockey and lacrosse teams.
 
President’s Award
This award is given to a current student-athlete who has distinguished him/herself throughout their Hood College careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.

The recipient is Jessica Stanley, a four-year member of track and field team.

Scholar-Athlete Award
This award is given to a current student-athlete who maintains superior academic standing and is a major contributor to his/her team.

The recipient is Laura Hines, a four-year letter winner on the women’s soccer team.
 
Trustees’ Award
The Trustees’ Award is given to a current student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Hood College athletic department and whose proficiency and reliability are invaluable to the athletic administration.

The recipient is Danielle Hunt, a four-year member of the women’s tennis team.
 
Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award
The Most Outstanding Student-Athlete Award is given to a current male and female student-athlete who have demonstrated exemplary athletic prowess throughout their careers at Hood College.

The male recipient is William Andrews, a four-year star on the men’s cross country and track and field teams.
The female recipient is Brandy Noel, a two-sport starter on the field hockey and lacrosse teams.
