Gallaudet, Mary Washington, Salisbury And York Teams Register Key Wins To Highlight Weekend Activity

Gallaudet won a women's soccer game for the first time in three years, Salisbury's field hockey team upended the No. 3-ranked team in the country and four CAC teams won tournaments and two others picked up first place cross country trophies to highlight the weekend competitions.

The Gallaudet University women's soccer team celebrated on Sunday afternoon as the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard at Hotchkiss Field. The Bison jumped up and down, exchanged hugs and even dosed their coach Sarah Gumina with water to celebrate the 2-0 shutout over Patrick Henry College on the final day of the GU 1st Annual Tournament.  Women's soccer victories have been rare for the Bison over the years. Gallaudet last won a game on October 30, 2006 with a 5-1 victory over Mary Baldwin College a streak of 37 games.

Gallaudet (1-2-1) got on the board first when freshman Johanna Arrigo (Ewing, N.J.) floated a shot over Patrick Henry goalie Tara Bennett (six saves) seven minutes into the game. The Bison continued to pressure the Sentinel (2-4) goal as GU rifled off nine shots in the first half. GU added a second goal off the foot of senior Samantha Bulewich (West Springfield, Mass.) in the 38th minute as the Bison enjoyed a 2-0 lead at halftime.  In the second half, the Bison defense stepped up to the challenge and limited Patrick Henry to seven shots and four corner kicks. GU freshman goalie Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) made 11 saves, the second most in a game for her young career, to earn her first victory in net for the Bison.

Salisbury's field hockey squad became the second CAC team this season to defeat a non-conference opponent ranked in the Top 10 in the country when the 6th-ranked Sea Gulls shut out #3 Ursinus Sunday, 2-0.  It was the first time the Bears were shut out since 2003 and improved SU's record to 5-0.  Last week, un-ranked Mary Washington edged eighth-ranked Lebanon Valley by a 4-3 margin.

After a scoreless and highly competitive first half, Salisbury shot out of the gates with a goal by junior midfielder Kandice Hancock (Westover, Md.). The Gulls capitalized again in the 59th minute of play, as senior forward Lauren Correll (Bridgeville, Del.) scored an unassisted goal. In the box, sophomore goalie Anna Cooke (Ann Arbor, Mich.) (5-0) tallied nine saves, while Bears goalie Erica Scott (3-2) had three saves on the day.

In men's soccer, both CAC undefeated teams - Salisbury and York - picked up tournament titles on the road this weekend.  Mary Washington also went 2-0 and captured top honors at the Lynchburg Tournament.

Salisbury outscored Bridgewater (Va.) and Randolph-Macon by a combined margin of 16-1 to win the St. Mary's Classic.  SMC also defeated the two opponents from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, but the Gulls were declared tournament champions by margin of victory.  SU's Kyle Sterling was named the Tournament's MVP.

York stopped N.C. Wesleyan (2-1) and Greensboro (4-0) to win the title at Greensboro and extend their undefeated string to 24 matches over the past two seasons.  Senior All-American Jon Ports was named the Tournament MVP.

UMW defeated Lynchburg and Randolph to extend its winning streak to four matches.  Junior midfielder Jae Park led the Eagles and was named Tournament MVP.

In volleyball action, Salisbury wrapped up its visit to Washington, Pa. with two wins in day two of the Washington & Jefferson Tournament to capture the top spot at the event. The Gulls downed Penn State-Altoona and Thiel Saturday, followed by wins over St. Vincent and Muskingum Sunday, to win the title and improve to 7-1 this season.

In cross country action, Mary Washington picked up two team titles at the Washington & Lee Invitational.  Junior Kristy Witek was the top individual in the women's race to lead the Eagles.
