CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY - The First Saturday Of November Is Annually The Biggest Day On The CAC Calendar

Annually, it's the biggest day in the Capital Athletic Conference  - Championship Saturday in the Fall Semester.  Six of the CAC's 19 championship trophies will be awarded tomorrow (11/6) - the most in any day all year.

Frostburg State (volleyball), Mary Washington (field hockey), Salisbury (men's & women's cross country), Stevenson (women's soccer) and York (men's soccer) will all host championship events.

Here is a brief preview on each championship:

11 a.m. - Men's Cross Country at Salisbury ... and noon - Women's Cross Country at Salisbury:

The University of Mary Washington and Salisbury University have dominated the Capital Athletic Conference cross country championships for the past 19 seasons, and expect to battle for the top team and individual positions at the 2010 championship races Saturday (11/6) at Winterplace Park in Salisbury, Md.

UMW will defend its men’s team championship in the 8,000-meter chase that begins at 11 a.m.  The Eagles’ 2009 title snapped a string of four-straight Salisbury men’s championships (and six in the previous seven seasons).

The host Sea Gulls will then try to win their third-straight women’s crown, and sixth in seven seasons, when the starter’s gun fires for the 6,000-meter event at noon.

Combined, the Eagles and Gulls have won all 38 CAC cross country crowns since the inception of the conference in 1991.  UMW has 24 CAC cross country championships, including 13 men’s titles and 11 women’s trophies.  Salisbury has 14 crowns, including eight on the men’s side and six women’s championships.

1 p.m. - Field Hockey - #4 seed Wesley at #3 seed Mary Washington
(winner receives automatic bid to NCAA Championship Tournament)

Wesley (13-8), under coach Tracey Short, who recorded her 200th career win earlier this season, is making its first-ever appearance in the CAC Championship game.  Mary Washington (13-7) won the first three CAC titles (1991-93) under veteran head coach Dana Hall, who has more than 270 career victories.  During the regular season, UMW posted a 2-0 win over the Wolverines in Fredericksburg, Va.

1 p.m. - Women's Soccer - #2 seed Frostburg State at #1 seed Stevenson
(winner receives automatic bid to NCAA Championship Tournament)

Frostburg State is in its first season as a member of the CAC, and the Bobcats have four chances at their first conference title as the women's soccer and volleyball teams play in championship events Saturday (along with the two cross country teams).

Stevenson, which clinched its second-straight regular-season title, will be hosting its second-straight appearance in the CAC title game.  The Mustangs tied Mary Washington in the 2009 championship, but the Eagles took the title and NCAA Tournament bid with a shootout victory.

This game features two of the most prolific scorers in CAC history.

FSU (15-3) is led by sophomore Amanda Wharton, who broke the CAC record for goals in a season by finding the back of the net 27 times in 18 games - that's an incredible 1.5 goals per game.

Wharton broke the single-season scoring record of Stevenson's Stephanie Eyler, who set the CAC mark as a freshman in 2008 with 22 goals and matched that number in 2009.  Eyler enters Saturday's championship game with 50 career goals - which ranks second in CAC history.

The Bobcats boast a four-game win streak, and six wins in their last seven outings.  The only setback during that stretch was at Stevenson, by a 2-1 margin on Oct. 13.

2 p.m. - Volleyball - #2 seed Mary Washington at #1 seed Frostburg State
(winner receives automatic bid to NCAA Championship Tournament)

This will be FSU's first opportunity to host a CAC championship event and UMW's first championship match appearance since 2001, when the Eagles fell to top-seeded Catholic University by a 3-0 margin.  UMW's only victory in three championship game appearances was in the first year of the conference - 1991 (3-0 win vs. York).

FSU (31-3) defeated UMW (19-8) by a 3-0 count on Oct. 6 on the way to posting an 8-0 conference record and gain the regular-season crown.

2 p.m. - Men's Soccer - #2 seed Salisbury at #1 seed York
(winner receives automatic bid to NCAA Championship Tournament)

The two powerhouse teams in the CAC over the second half of the decade will play for the 2010 title.  York is ranked third in the region while Salisbury is eighth.  Both teams feature incredibly tough defenses to score upon.

York (16-4) has allowed only nine goals all year, and was unscored upon by any CAC team this year - nine shutouts, including the 2-0 decision over Mary Washington in the CAC semifinals.  The Spartans have recorded 14 shutouts in 20 outings.

Salisbury (12-3-4) opponents have only scored 10 times all year, outscored CAC rivals by a 14-3 margin and recorded 12 shutouts this season.

York is the defending conference champion, thanks to a 2-1 win over Stevenson, and has won three titles in the last five years (four since 1998).  York has played in the NCAA Championship Tournament five-straight years.

Salisbury's 2008 championship was its seventh since 1999.  The Sea Gulls have advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven of the last eight seasons.
