“Pink” October A Success For CAC Athletic Programs, Raising $15,885 For Cancer And Other Causes

The nine Capital Athletic Conference athletic programs combined to raise $15,885 for charitable organizations, primarily associated with cancer research, during Pink October, 2010.

Most teams focus during the month of October on cancer awareness, and many raise funds through volleyball “Dig Pink” initiatives to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  Other options include supporting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation as well as local charitable options.

St. Mary’s College (Md.) started the CAC’s month-long effort with the field hockey team raising funds for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) for Childhood Cancer during the athletic department’s annual Hawktober Festival on Oct. 1-3, which included home events in field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball.

Marymount (Va.) University served up the first of a handful of “Dig Pink” nights at volleyball games on Oct. 6 when the Saints hosted Hood College.  Frostburg State University, Hood College, the University of Mary Washington, Stevenson University and York College of Pa. also hosted “Dig Pink” home volleyball events in October.

Salisbury also focused on bettering the lives of animals by supporting local organizations with a “Dig for Dogs” volleyball match Oct. 21st against Stevenson.

The regular-season champion Sea Gull field hockey team, as well as Stevenson’s field hockey squad, also conducted cancer fundraisers during October that each contributed more than $2,000 to the CAC total.

Wesley College’s athletic department is selling a variety of items, and collecting donations, at all athletic events throughout the month to raise money to fight cancer.

York teams, in addition to its “Dig Pink” night, sponsored events on three consecutive days at volleyball, field hockey and men’s soccer contests aimed at raising funds and awareness “for the cure.”
