The Capital Athletic Conference announced that a record of 1,109 student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 All-Academic Team. It is the second-straight year that more than 1,000 student-athletes, representing nine member institutions and 21 championship sports, were named to the conference’s All-Academic Team and the fourth-straight year the total number of honorees increased.

Student-athletes in one or more CAC championship sports that attain a 3.20 grade point average (GPA) for the academic year earn a spot on the All-Academic team. Nearly 40% of CAC student-athletes posted a 3.20 GPA this year (1,108 out of 2,822 student-athletes, 39.3%).

Six schools totaled at least 100 student-athletes on the CAC All-Academic Team, including a CAC-best 181 honorees on Salisbury University teams. It’s the first time since at least 2006 that Salisbury passed York College (Pa.) for the top spot on the list of total student-athletes on the CAC All-Academic list. York, the only CAC school to sponsor all 21 championship sports, was second with 176 student-athletes on the 2011-12 All-Academic Team while St. Mary’s College of Md. was third with 153 student-athletes.

St. Mary’s led the conference for the fifth consecutive year with 50.7 percent of its student-athletes (153 out of 302) earning a berth on the 2011-12 All-Academic Team. Salisbury (45.6%), York (43.9%) and Stevenson (41.6%) also had more than 40 percent of their student-athletes on this year’s list of honorees.

Frostburg State University had the largest increase of total student-athletes on the All-Academic team, adding 23 honorees to last year’s total of 95 to place sixth overall among CAC schools this year with 118 student-athletes on the all-Academic Team. FSU edged Marymount (Va.) University (increase of 20 from 2011) for the highest increase in total student-athletes. The University of Mary Washington (plus 19), Stevenson University (plus 18) and Salisbury (plus 14) also had significant increases this year.

FSU also edged Marymount and Mary Washington for the highest increase in percentage of student-athletes on the All-Academic team. Counting only CAC championship sports, FSU raised its total percentage of student-athletes 5.7% this year to 34.5%. Marymount improved 5.4% to 35.1% while Mary Washington raised the bar 4.9% to 34.7% of its student-athletes on the All-Academic team. Salisbury (up 3.9%) and Stevenson (up 3.5%) also showed strong improvement in the classroom.

The success in the classroom was also rewarded with a CAC-record eight student-athletes being named to the Capital One Academic All-America teams this year. Marymount, Stevenson and Wesley College student-athletes were named to the Capital One Academic All-America teams this year for the first time in school history.
