When the weather begins to turn cooler, thoughts around a college campus turn to Homecoming, and one of the highlights of Salisbury University’s Homecoming Weekend is the Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The 2012 Hall of Fame class will honor three members, who will be inducted this October.

Former student-athletes Erik Miller, Lisa Neylan and Michael Svehla, will bring the Hall of Fame’s total number to 117, on October 12. The ceremony will be held in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, beginning at 6 p.m. The formal event recognizes the men and women, past and present, whose contributions to Salisbury University athletics have deemed them worthy of induction into the SU Hall of Fame.

Miller (Class of 1995), a two-year member of the men’s lacrosse team, helped the program to its first of 10 national championships. Miller, a goalkeeper, was named a first-team All-American in 1994 and was named national Goalkeeper of the Year along with Most Outstanding Player in the national championship game as Salisbury beat Hobart 15-9. He was an honorable mention All-American in 1993. In playing just the two seasons, he graduated No. 6 in school history in career saves with 307, he currently ranks tied for ninth.

Neylan (Class of 2001) was a four-year letter winner with the women’s basketball program and is one of just two Sea Gulls to be twice named an All-American as she earned honorable mention honors in 2000 and 2001. Neylan was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year at the end of the 1999-2000 season. She graduated as the program’s career scoring leader, and currently sits No. 2, with 1,540 points. She is one of just three 1,000-1,000 players in program history having pulled down 1,043 rebounds (third in program history).

Svehla (Class of 2002) was a four-year member of the men’s soccer team, playing in net in 78 of the team’s 83 games during his time as a Sea Gull. Svehla helped Salisbury to its first two NCAA tournament appearances, in 1999 and 2000, was an All-American in 1999 and was twice named to the All-Region team. He was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference first team twice, including being named CAC Player of the Year in 1999. Svehla was part of 45 shutouts in four years posting a 0.73 goals-allowed average. His 264 career saves are third in program history.

Hall of Fame inductees are selected among former student-athletes, coaches and staff members for their success in competetition, and, with the addition of the Award of Excellence in 2011, for their ability to carry on the great reputation of Salisbury athletics after graduation.
