St. Mary’s College of Maryland Director of Athletics and Recreation Scott Devine announced Tuesday afternoon that Brian Wolcott ’05 (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Julio Zarate ’04 (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mills) will constitute St. Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2012.

Wolcott and Zarate will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday, October 5, as part of the kickoff ceremonies for the annual Hawktoberfest at Family Weekend — a St. Mary’s Homecoming of sorts.  The induction ceremony will be held Friday evening at Daugherty-Palmer Commons.

Devine exclaimed, “Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is the highest honor an athlete or coach can receive from their institution and these two gentlemen are extremely deserving of the honor that has been bestowed upon them.”

The Hall of Fame used to be celebrated every year starting with the first class induction in 1990 but after the Class of 2000 induction, the Hall of Fame is now recognized every two years.

Brian Wolcott ’05 was a soccer standout for St. Mary’s, finishing his four-year career second all-time in goals (47) and assists (26) as well as third in program history in points (120).  Wolcott is also currently tied for second all-time with 12 game-winning goals.  He collected the Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year award in 2001 after finishing his rookie season with six goals and five assists for 17 points.  Wolcott would go on to earn NSCAA)/adidas® All-South Region honors for three consecutive seasons, including a first team nod in 2003.  He was also a three-time first team All-CAC selection in 2002, 2003, and 2004.  The Seahawks posted a four-year record of 49-22-3 (16-12 CAC), including three straight winning seasons and three straight appearances in the CAC Tournament semifinals.

Julio Zarate ’04, the current assistant coach for the Seahawk men’s and women’s swimming programs, graduated from St. Mary’s as the most decorated male swimmer to ever pass through the program.  Zarate owned seven school records at one point during his Seahawk career, including five that he still held at the time of his graduation in 2004 – 200 individual medley, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay.  The 2001 Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, he earned eight All-CAC honors, including capturing the 100 and 200 backstroke events in 2001 and defending the 200 back title in 2002.  Zarate garnered team MVP honors three times as well.
