St. Mary's College And The CAC Mourn The Loss Of Former Seahawk Standout Jamie Roberts

Jamie Roberts, a former three-sport standout at St. Mary's College, was killed Friday in an accident while riding her bike across country in support of cancer research.

Scott Devine, the SMCM director of athletics and recreation, expressed, “This is such sad news as everyone who knew Jamie really loved her.”

Roberts was travelling in Scott County, Kentucky with a group affiliated with the Ulman Cancer Fund when she and another rider were struck by a truck traveling along U.S. 25 N. The group of five cyclists had stopped while Roberts changed a tire on her bike according to a report by the Georgetown News-Graphic.  She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The other rider sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

When Roberts passed, she was in the midst of a 4,000-mile bike ride from Baltimore to Portland in support of 4K for Cancer, offering hope, inspiration, and support to cancer communities. She was truly an inspiration to all who knew her. Before beginning her impressive journey on June 1st, Roberts donated 10 inches of her hair to Pantene Pro-V’s Beautiful Lengths/Pony Up program, which creates wigs for women fighting cancer.

Demonstrating just how inspirational she was to everyone who knew her, Jackie (Reid) Killebrew ’09 has formed the Facebook group, #MilesforJamie, in order to get Roberts to the finish line of her 4K ride.

“In her honor, I want to help her finish the remainder of the miles of her journey. She had about 3,685 miles remaining. Let's use this group to post our own rides. Post your miles and use the hashtag ‪#‎milesforjamie. Let's get our Jamie to the finish line!” posted Killebrew on the group description.

Roberts, a native of Rockville, Md., graduated from SMC in 2011 from with a degree in economics.

A beloved member of the St. Mary’s community, Roberts was a three-sport athlete who starred for the Seahawks on the soccer (2009-10) and lacrosse (2009-11) field as well as on the hardwood (2007-11). She was an all-conference player in both basketball and lacrosse. As a senior, she picked up the SMCM Female Athlete of the Year Award and the Athletic Director’s Award.

Roberts just completed her third year as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program as well as an assistant in the athletics communications office at The Catholic University of America.

When Devine presented the Athletic Director’s Award to her, he said of Roberts, “No matter what the sport, Jamie has been an ideal teammate, a true student-athlete, and a wonderful leader in her own right. This speaks volumes to Jamie’s character, her likeability, and her all around athleticism. She will be leaving a very special Seahawk athletic legacy behind.”
