Nine CAC Institutions Ranked in Final Winter Learfield Directors' Cup Standings; Christopher Newport 14th

Christopher Newport is ranked 14th in the final winter standings of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup to lead a group of nine Capital Athletic Conference schools in the Division III rankings. York (71st), Frostburg State (149th), Salisbury (166th), Wesley (166th), Marymount (170th), Southern Virginia (221st), Mary Washington (224th), and Penn State Harrisburg (285th) also earned points through the winter season. 

MIT moved up from second to first place overall with 686.5 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (639.5) and Williams (613) in the top three. 

Ranked 12th following the fall season, Christopher Newport slipped two spots into 14th with 444 points after the winter. The Captains notched points this winter in both men's and women's basketball and men's and women's indoor track & field. Men's indoor track & field led the way with an eighth-place finish at the national championships, tallying 70.5 points to the Captains' total. Women's basketball advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fifth time in the last six seasons, compiling 64 points. Men's basketball totaled 50 points with a trip to the NCAA second round, while women's indoor track & field added 21.5 points to CNU's total with a 50th-place finish at nationals. 

York jumped from 121st place to 71st with a strong winter season that included points from men's basketball, men's swimming, and wrestling. The Spartans earned 50 points in men's basketball with a trip to the NCAA second round, and 49 points in wrestling with a 25th-place finish. Freshman men's swimmer Keven Stahl added 24 points to York's total with an All-America finish at NCAA's, securing 49th-place in the team standings. 

Frostburg State ranked 149th after the winter, remaining at 70 points gained in the fall season. The Bobcat football program advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and won a program-record 11 games in 2017, earning all 70 points for FSU in the fall. 

Salisbury and Wesley remained tied in the standings with 53 points, dropping from 83rd to 166th following the winter. Neither program registered points throughout the winter. 

Marymount made its way into the Directors' Cup rankings in 170th place with 50 points from its women's basketball program. The Saints advanced to the NCAA second round before falling to Rochester (N.Y.). 

Southern Virginia also climbed into the rankings this winter with a 45th-place finish in wrestling, contributing 27 points for the Knights. 

Mary Washington is in 224th place, with its 25 points coming from its men's soccer NCAA appearance in the fall. 

Penn State Harrisburg also made its way into the Directors' Cup standings this winter with an All-America finish from Ashley Williams at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Williams secured 15.5 points with a 56th-place team finish at the championships for the Lions. 

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish at the NCAA championships. 

The final Division III standings for the 2017-18 year will be released in June.
