Christopher Newport's Gabby Gillis Honored as CAC Female Athlete of the Year

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Christopher Newport senior women's soccer midfielder Gabby Gillis (Leesburg, Va./Leesburg) was tabbed by the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) athletic directors as the 2018-19 CAC Female Athlete of the Year. 

The Female Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the CAC student-athlete who garnered superior athletic recognition and achievement, either individually or in conjunction with her team.

Gillis helped the Captains reach the NCAA National Semifinals for the first time in program history as she helped CNU break the program record for points in a season and assists in a single year while also shattering the most wins in a season (21). She became the third player in program history to score 40-plus points after finishing the year with 41 points on 15 goals and 11 assists.

Gillis was named the D3Soccer.com National Midfielder of the Year as she become the first National Player of the Year in CNU soccer history. She achieved First Team All-America accolades in both 2018 and 2019 and was named United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year along with First Team Scholar All-American, VaSID State Player of the Year and CAC Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019. She earned all-conference status four times during her impressive career.

She wrapped up her career ranking third in career points (96) and fourth in career goals scored (38). She added 20 assists, ranking in the top ten all-time, and started all 85 games in her tenure, setting the program record for most games played and started. Gillis helped CNU win a record 71 games over the last four years, going 71-11-3 with a winning percentage of 85.3%.
