CAC Players of the Week - Oct. 15

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Conference tournament time is quickly approaching with just two weeks of the regular season remaining prior to fall postseason play. This week's weekly awards were collected by Dana Meehling and Sam Keating of York field hockey, Matt Mackenzie of Salisbury men's soccer, Patrick Paolini of St. Mary's men's soccer, Riley Cook of Christopher Newport women's soccer, Kelcie Macomber of Mary Washington women's soccer, and Riley Garrison of Christopher Newport volleyball. Cook, Macomber, and Garrison each earned weekly honors for the second week in a row.

CAC Players of the Week

Oct. 8 - 14

FIELD HOCKEY - OFFENSIVE POTW

Dana Meehling | York | So. | M

Monkton, Md. | Hereford

Meehling led the Spartans to a pair of CAC wins with two goals and an assist in victories over St. Mary's and No. 10 Christopher Newport. She began the week with an assist in the Spartans' 4-0 win at St. Mary's. Later in the week, she scored both goals in York's 2-1 victory over the 10th-ranked Captains on Saturday. She opened the scoring late in the first half with a blast from the left side off a penalty corner. She then was the hero in the overtime, putting home a game-winning penalty stroke after senior Lindsay Nye was taken down on a breakaway. The penalty stroke was her first career game-winning goal.

FIELD HOCKEY - DEFENSIVE POTW

Sam Keating | York | Jr. | GK

Annapolis, Md. | Broadneck

Keating registered a 2-0 week in the cage with 11 saves and one shutout. She opened the week with her second consecutive shutout, blanking St. Mary's with six saves in a 4-0 win over the Seahawks. She followed that with a stellar performance in holding the high-flying Christopher Newport offense to one goal as she made five stops in leading York to a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday. Keating finished the week with 11 saves in 143:39 of work in cage, posting a .917 save percentage and goals against average of 0.49.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE POTW

Matt Mackenzie | Salisbury | Jr. | D

Crofton, Md. | Arundel

Mackenzie tallied the game-winning goal to lift Salisbury past No. 8 Mary Washington on Saturday with just 2:39 remaining. Mackenzie's marker, which came on a free kick from 25 yards out, was the first of his career, and handed UMW its first loss of the season.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE POTW

Patrick Paolini | St. Mary's | Jr. | GK

Gaithersburg, Md. | Quince Orchard

Paolini registered two shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for St. Mary's. Paolini put up three stops to preserve the 1-0 road win over regionally-ranked Salisbury. He then needed just one save in picking up the scoreless draw at Frostburg State. Paolini now has five shutouts under his belt. He is currently tied for third in the CAC with five shutouts while ranking fifth in both GAA (.92) and save percentage (.796).

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE POTW

Riley Cook | Christopher Newport | So. | F

Mechanicsville, Va. | Atlee

Cook earned back-to-back Offensive Player of the Week nods after notching four goals and two assists in a 3-0 week for the Captains, including a pair of game-winning scores. She opened the week by registering her first career hat trick and an assist in a 5-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan. She assisted on Gabby Gillis' game-winning goal against Southern Virginia, and scored the game-winning goal against York with a header in the ninth minute of action. Cook has now taken over the CAC lead in scoring with 30 points, and became just the second player in CNU history to score 30 points in each of her first two seasons.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE POTW

Kelcie Macomber | Mary Washington | Sr. | GK

Herndon, Va. | Oakton

Macomber was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row with a pair of CAC shutout wins in net last week. She She recorded two saves in each in victories over Frostburg State and Salisbury, helping the Eagles extend their winning streak to four straight and their shutout streak to three in a row.

VOLLEYBALL 

Riley Garrison | Christopher Newport | Jr. | MB

Ashburn, Va. | Briar Woods

Garrison collected back-to-back Player of the Week honors after continuing to start on the defensive end for the 23rd-ranked Captains, including a historic performance at Catholic on Friday. Against the Cardinals, she equaled CNU's single-match program record with 12 blocks. Only four Captains have ever reached that total, and Garrison is the first to do it twice after also collecting a dozen rejections against York on Oct. 27, 2017. Additionally, Garrison clubbed 14 kills while hitting .684 against Catholic. With that effort, she became the second Captain ever to record at least 12 kills and 12 blocks in a single match. Rounding out her week, Garrison also notched nine blocks in a league victory at Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday before driving home nine kills to go along with five more rejections on Friday against Lynchburg. Overall, Garrison averaged 2.17 blocks per set while posting 28 kills and a .400 hitting percentage during the week.
