CAC Players of the Week - Sept. 25
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- All fall and split season sports are now underway, with this week's reports featuring the first tennis and women's golf athletes of the week of the fall 2018 season. Weekly honors were awarded to Ray Smith of York men's cross country, Emily Knerr of Mary Washington women's cross country, Casey Leebrick of York men's golf, Erica Whitehouse of Christopher Newport women's golf, Mason Kolls of Christopher Newport men's tennis, and Johanna Ranta-aho of Christopher Newport women's tennis.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Ray Smith | York | Sr.
Ellicott City, Md. | Howard
Smith placed third among 222 runners to lead the Spartans to the team championship at the Lock Haven Open on Saturday afternoon. Smith cloked in with a time of 25.48.1, just four seconds out of a runner-up finish. The third-place finish is the best of Smith's Spartan career. Smith and the Spartans defeated a number of Division II foes en route to the team title including Lock Haven, West Chester, Bloomsburg, Slippery Rock, and Mansfield.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Emily Knerr | Mary Washington | Sr.
Richmond, Va. | Deep Run
Knerr was the Eagles' top finisher at the Shenandoah Hornet Harrier on Saturday, as she finished second overall in the 6K race with a time of 19:16.7. The Eagles finished second in the team standings in the event with 57, just behind Washington & Lee, who scored 43.

MEN'S GOLF
Casey Leebrick | York | Fr.
San Luis Obispo, Calif. | San Luis Obispo
In his collegiate debut, Leebrick won the Montgomery Cup with a two-day score of eight-under-par for a total of 136 strokes at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Delaware, Pa. He fired a school-record five-under-par 67 on Saturday and followed that with a three-under-par 69 to capture a two-stroke win in his collegiate debut.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Whitehouse led record-breaking performance at the Bridgewater Invitational as she captured individual medalist honors. She reset her own program record for single-round scoring with her first career round under par (-2), and also led the Captains' best ever team round, as CNU fired a 320 (+32) and won the rain-shortened event after one round. Whitehouse won the individual trophy by seven strokes. She led the ournament with 13 pars and also dropped her first career eagle.

Kolls defeated a pair of Division I opponents en route to a perfect 6-0 start to his collegiate career last weekend, leading the Captains' men's tennis performance at the CNU Invite. Kolls won the Flight C title in both singles and doubles, posting matching 3-0 records in his first career appearance, In singles, he started with a win over Hampton University junior Basil Post (6-3, 6-0). In the semifinals, he defeated teammate James Baron (6-3, 6-4) and in Sunday's flight final, he took down Norfolk State's Ignacio Guevel (6-1, 6-2). He also paired with fellow rookie Paul Baron in doubles for another win over a Division I opponent when they took down Buck and Thompson from Hampton University, 8-4, and earned wins over Mitch Brody and Bryce Coleman from CNU, 8-5, and CNU's Dominic Lacombe and James Baron, 8-4.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Ranta-aho reached the singles semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship for the second time in her career, posting a 4-1 mark in the top draw of the tournament. She reached the semifinals with wins over Rachel Neeleman of Southern Virginia (6-0, 6-1), Julia Gokhberg of Swarthmore (6-4, 6-2), Alex Iordache of Carnegie Mellon (6-1, 6-3), and Jamie Vizelman of Carnegie Mellon (5-7, 6-4, 6-3). She also earned a doubles win in the championship draw.
