CAC Players of the Week - Sept. 4

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Fall sports are now underway with six CAC sports kicking off action this past weekend. Weekly honors were awarded to (pictured, left-to-right, top-to-bottom): Jillian Hughes from Salisbury field hockey, Emily Lemanski from Salisbury field hockey, LaRee Crockett from Southern Virginia volleyball, Ken Kurtz from Mary Washington men's soccer, Stephen Durbin from Christopher Newport men's soccer, Gabby Gillis from Christopher Newport women's soccer, and Keiley McCarthy from Christopher Newport women's soccer.

FIELD HOCKEY - OFFENSIVE POTW

Emily Lemanski | Salisbury | Sr. | F

Severn, Md. | Seton Keough

Lemanski scored three of Salisbury's five goals in the team's two-win weekend at the Misericordia Invitational. She had the game-winner in each win, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against Dickinson on Friday and adding the first score in a 4-0 win against Misericordia on Saturday. Lemanski scored the three goals on just six shot attempts, putting five of them on target.

FIELD HOCKEY - DEFENSIVE POTW

Jillian Hughes | Salisbury | Jr. | D

Andover, Mass. | Andover

Hughes anchored a Salisbury defense which pitched a pair of shutouts at the Misericordia Invitational this past weekend, allowing just one shot on goal through the 140 minutes. In the Sea Gulls' 1-0 win against Dickinson on Friday, the Salisbury defense allowed just two shots, one of which was on goal. In Saturday's 4-0 win against Misericordia, the Cougars managed just three shots, none of which required a save.

MEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE POTW

Stephen Durbin | Christopher Newport | Sr. | F

Burke, Va. | Lake Braddock

Durbin scored three goals and added an assist during the Captains' two victories last weekend at the Joe Pombriant / CNU Soccer Classic. He scored in the first minute against Greensboro and then the first two minutes against Pfeiffer. Durbin factored into all three first-half goals against Pfeiffer, including the game-winning goal.

MEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE POTW

Ken Kurtz | Mary Washington | So. | GK

Katonah, N.Y. | Somers

Kurtz earned pair of victories in net over the weekend, allowing one goal in 160 minutes of action while making seven saves and posting one shutout. He opened the year with four saves in the Eagles' 2-1 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan, before stopping three shots in 69:59 minutes in a 5-0 shutout over Hampden-Sydney.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - OFFENSIVE POTW

Gabby Gillis | Christopher Newport | Sr. | M

Leesburg, Va. | Loudoun County

Gillis scored five of CNU's eight goals last week, including both game-winners, while also adding an assist. CNU's first-ever first team All-American last season, Gillis has picked up right where she left off with a dominating 11-point performance in the two-game week, helping the 17th-ranked Captains open with wins over ninth-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse and Saint Benedict at the Atlantic Orthopedics Tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University. Gillis opened with both scores in a 2-1 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse, and tallied three goals and an assist in a 5-0 win over Saint Benedict. With last week's performance, she moved to ninth in CNU history in career points, eighth in goals, and tied for eighth in game-winning goals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - DEFENSIVE POTW

Keiley McCarthy | Christopher Newport | Jr. | D

Clifton, Va. | Robinson

McCarthy helped nationally-ranked CNU open the season with a 2-0-0 mark at the Atlantic Orthopedics Tournament. McCarthy and the CNU defense posted a shutout against Saint Benedict and allowed only one goal in two games, to ninth-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse. She also chipped in an assist on the game-winning goal against Saint Benedict.

VOLLEYBALL 

LaRee Crockett | Southern Virginia | Jr. | S

Wilcox, Ariz. | Wilcox

Crockett led the Knights to 4-0 season debut and team title at the Cougar Classic hosted by Averett. She registered 30 or more assists in all four matches, including 40-plus in two of the victories. Crockett averaged 11.46 assists and 3.0 digs per set while also contributing six total blocks. The Knights defeated Randolph, Averett, William Peace and Guilford in impressive fashion, dropping just one set throughout the four matches.
