Student-Athletes Volunteer at Maryland Special Olympics

EMMITSBURG, MD -- Hood College student-athletes from various varsity teams volunteered last weekend at the Maryland Special Olympics at Mt. St. Mary's University.

Members of the softball and volleyball squads worked primarily with the soccer athletes during the event. The group of volunteers included head softball coach Tricia Fiut, freshman Krista Zerby, freshman Chelsea Weaver, sophomore Stephanie Gardner, junior Jamie Gardner, freshman Jen Lacy, senior Alecia Weddle, senior Kate Hassell, senior Lindsay Nagy, senior Jen Guyer, freshman Lena Bushrod and former Hood student-athlete Melissa Kelly.

"We got to meet and talk to a lot of the participants during the day," said Weddle, a senior on the softball team. "It was great to see so many smiling people that day. Our day started off by going to the opening day celebration and seeing all of the maryland counties being introduced. All of their teammates cheered and people from Hood cheered for their home counties. We then went and helped out at the soccer fields. We kept score and helped by chasing balls. It was a great experience and I hope to continue to help with it every year! I had a blast!"

SAAC Mission Statement:

The mission of the Capital Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the overall student-athlete experience.  The representatives who serve on this committee serve as a communication link between the conference SAAC, their institutional SAAC, and their respective sports team(s).  The representatives have an understanding of the NCAA legislation and issues that are present in Division III athletics.  These student-athletes serve as a representative of every student-athlete at their institution, and their charge is to have every student-athletes' voice heard on the conference level. The student-athletes who serve on this committee are role models to all, and look to foster & promote good sportsmanship while maintaining the tenants of the Division III philosophy.

Upcoming Events:

Community Service Project - The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee functions as an organization that promotes cooperation between the academic and athletic hierarchy in a university setting.  This organization serves as a vital source of communication and cooperation between students and coaches, professors, and their designated athletic departments.  SAAC has many major responsibilities that include corresponding with their teams after every meeting and keeping them informed of ongoing and upcoming SAAC events.  SAAC also functions to provide a support group for every sport and serves as a network for where all student athletes can come together and work towards a common goal.

Community service serves as one way in which SAAC student athletes can come together to help the community and their universities.  The Capital Athletic Conference has come together and designated a CAC wide community service project.  The goals for this large scale community service project include:

  • To provide students with opportunities to collaborate toward a common goal across school boundaries within the athletic setting of the CAC.
  • To develop leadership skills and to reaffirm one's commitment to SAAC and society as a whole.
  • To provide students additional opportunities to move beyond their home SAAC institutions and connect with an expanded network.
  • To help fulfill the SAAC mission statement, which aims to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity for all student-athletes; protecting student-athlete welfare; and fostering a positive student-athlete image, while maintaining the tenants of the Division III philosophy.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from all schools in the CAC will come together and implement one large community service project.  The project will be designated "Pennies for the Poor." A description of this community service project is given below and dates are tentative; however, the project will be conducted on a week in February at a home basketball at each school:

Pennies for the Poor

  • Each SAAC organization will collect money at a home event on one designated week during the year.
  • These donations will be combined from each school's collection.
  • These combined donations will be given to a national charity which would be selected by the executive board (The Red Cross, The American Cancer Society, Leukemia Society, etc).

Overall, the conference wide SAAC organization feels that this idea could really help us come together and would serve as a very practical and collaborative community service project that would help us cooperate with other student athletes and help the community.  This project further works to maintain the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's mission statement.
