Frostburg State Baseball Eliminated From NCAA Tournament By Top-Ranked Marietta, 7-2
After dropping the opening game of the 2011 NCAA DIII Mideast
Regional Tournament, the Frostburg State baseball team faced a
do-or-die situation against not only the number one seed in the
tournament, but the number one team in the country, Marietta.
Despite a strong pitching performance from senior Greg
Ross in which he set the single-season school record
in strikeouts, the Bobcats dropped their final game of the
tournament and the season, 7-2 to the Pioneers, late Thursday
night.
Ross finished the day with 10 strikeouts to push his season total
to 112, the previous record was 103. Ross got the first batter of
the game to go down swinging to tie the record and sealed his place
in the records books the third and last batter of the inning,
getting him to go down swinging as well.
Each team was held in check until the bottom of the third when
Marietta plated the first two runs of the game. The Pioneers scored
their runs on just one hit but two costly Bobcat errors.
Frostburg game back in the top of the fifth with two runs to tie
the game. Junior John Barrett doubled
to left field and classmate Daniel
Heatwole singled him home with a shot to right
field. Junior Shane Boyd reached on a
fielder's choice and came around to score on classmate
Adam Summerfelt's single to right
field.
Marietta answered right back, however, in the home half of the
inning, plating one run on three hits. The Pioneers plated the
final four runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth to put the
game out of reach for the Bobcats.
Ross ended the day suffering just his second loss of the season
with an overall record of 11-2. The righthander had 10 strikeouts
and gave up all seven runs, though only two were earned. He gave up
three walks and scattered seven hits.
Summerfelt, Jester and Barrett all ended the day with two hits
while Summerfelt and Jester each collected an RBI.
The Bobcats ended their season with a 28-15 overall record after
winning the Capital Athletic Conference tournament to earn their
spot in the Regionals. The automatic bid was the first one for
Frostburg State since 2007.
