Salisbury Baseball Stays Alive At NCAA South Regional With 10-1 Win Over Webster

On Wednesday, the 29th-ranked Salisbury University baseball team fell in its first game at the NCAA South Regional, 10-1 vs. Piedmont.  Salisbury turned the score around on Thursday afternoon, picking a 10-1 victory against sixth-seeded Webster University, to avoid elimination in the tournament.

Four different Sea Gulls had two hits in the contest as fourth-seeded Salisbury put up 13 hits in the game, including five extra-base knocks. The win is Salisbury's 30th of the season, the sixth-straight year that the Sea Gulls have reached that milestone.

Webster (32-12) took the early lead, scoring its only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning off senior pitcher Dustin Herbert. But the Huntingtown, Md., native would settle in, allowing just three hits over the next five innings while his offense went to work.

Salisbury (30-13) tied the game in the top of the fourth. Freshman Ken O'Neill doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Brian Green before scoring on junior Tyler Bennett's single to center field.

Freshman Bill Root tripled in the fifth to score junior Nick Walls for the game-winning run. The triple was the sixth of the season for Root, who is one shy of the program's single-season record that was set in 1977 by Jesse Plummer.

The Salisbury offense continued to click, giving Herbert some breathing room with five runs in the sixth.

Herbert needed little help the rest of the way, as he worked smoothly through his seven innings, allowing just the five hits and one walk while striking out a pair. Junior Bill Morton and senior Drew Baldwin each worked a perfect inning of relief.

O'Neill, Bennett, senior Devon Quaglietta (two doubles) and junior Chris Connor each had two hits in the game.

With the win the Sea Gulls advance to play on Friday. Salisbury will take on fifth-seeded Wabash College at 4:30 p.m., in an elimination game.
