Salisbury And St. Mary's Tied Atop The CAC  Baseball Standings After Winning 2 of 3 This Weekend; Stevenson Rallies To Take Series Vs. UMW

Ninth-ranked Salisbury and St. Mary's both won two of three games this weekend to remain tied for first place in the CAC baseball standings.  Stevenson also won two of three this weekend by scoring nine runs in the final two innings Sunday for an 11-10 win over Mary Washington.

After splitting Saturday's games, Salisbury ran away from Frostburg State Sunday for a 16-4 victory to improve to 11-3 overall, 4-2 in the CAC.

St. Mary's also split Saturday's DH vs. York, then downed the Spartans 4-3 Sunday to equal Salisbury's CAC record and improve to 9-4 overall.

Stevenson and Mary Washington split their DH Saturday, and UMW held a 10-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday.   But the Mustangs rallied with five runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth to gain an 11-10 triumph, taking over third place in the CAC with a 3-3 mark.

Next weekend's three-game series features Salisbury at Mary Washington, Wesley at St. Mary's and Stevenson at York.

Sunday at Salisbury, six Salisbury baseball players collected multiple hits and four drove in multiple runs as the No. 9 Sea Gulls defeated Frostburg State, 16-4.   SU (11-3, 4-2 CAC) scored in every inning except the second, sixth and eighth, banging out 17 hits.  Senior Tyler Bennett led the offensive attack, batting 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, two doubles, three runs scored and two driven in. Junior Matt Beck finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and a game-high three RBIs. Nick Walls, Quinn Griffith, Johnny Schiotis and Ken O'Neill also picked up two hits apiece.  Adam Summerfelt paced FSU, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Joe Markiewicz Jr. (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats. He went four innings, gave up six hits and six earned runs with three walks, fanning four.

At St. Mary's, first-year Zach Nadolny powered a three-run homer over the left field fence in the fourth inning of a tie game to lead St. Mary's to a 4-3 victory over York.  St. Mary's (9-4, 4-2 CAC) with the win took the three-game conference series from the Spartans, 2-1.  Senior Devon Jerrard went six innings earning the win, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits. Jerrard is now 2-2 on the season. Sophomore Sam Coe came in to relieve Jerrard in the seventh, pitching a scoreless final three innings to earn his first save of the season. Coe struck out four of the nine hitters he faced, while only surrendering two hits.  Sunday's win now puts St. Mary's head coach Lew Jenkins at 299 career victories. The Seahawks will look to earn career victory number 300 when they return to the Hawks Nest Tuesday March 13 when they take on Albertus Magnus for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.

At Stevenson, catcher Zac Stavish went 2-for-5 with two RBI, including the game-winning hit with two out in the ninth, to lift the Mustangs to an 11-10 win over Mary Washington.  Leadoff hitter Brad Blum led the 15-hit attack with three hits, two runs scored and three RBI while Justin Anderson added two hits and four RBI.  Ben Sisk paced the UMW offense with four hits, a run scored and three RBI.

At New York, five pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout as Wesley completed a three-game sweep over Polytechnic (N.Y.) with a 13-0 victory.   Zach Stuart improved to 1-1 on the year as he struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits in five innings.  Jeff Cochran, Andrew Cooper, Rich Lober and Brad Walker, who made his collegiate debut, all pitched one inning of relief and allowed just one hit while striking out eight combined.  Walker struck out the side in the ninth.  The bats were none too shabby either for the Wolverines (9-3) as they recorded 23 base hits on the day and every starter recorded at least one base hit.  Sam Farnell, Rob Benedict and Steve Perone all had four hits while Geoff Kimmel recorded three, including a home run.  Morgan Rupp also had a multi-hit game with a home run and Matt Robles collected a pair of base knocks as well.  Wesley outscored Polytechnic (1-11), 37-1, in the three-game set and outhit the Blue Jays, 52-14. The Wolverines hit a whopping .433 for the series and their pitchers held Poly to a .177 average.
