Salisbury and Frostburg State Advance to NCAA Baseball Regional Championships

Salisbury and Frostburg State both advanced to the championship game of their respective NCAA Baseball Regionals with victories on Friday. Both squads are now just one win away from the College World Series in Appleton, Wisc.  

Fourth-seeded Salisbury (32-4-1) defeated second-seeded Alvernia (33-13) 13-3 to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional title game at Santander Stadium in York, Pa. The Sea Gulls will now meet either Alvernia, Johns Hopkins or Misericordia in the championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. As the only 3-0 team in the regional, SU needs just one win to hoist the trophy. 

SU once again had a balanced offensive effort, with five different Gulls recording three hits in the contest. Salisbury outhit Alvernia, 21-9, in the game. Pete Grasso led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with four RBIs and three runs scored, while Jordan Gowe, Bobby Sanzone and Danny Breen each notched three hits and two RBIs. 

Junior Jeff Oster pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and recording four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season on the mound for Salisbury. Sophomore Ryan Daiss started on the hill for the Gulls, notching five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.

At the Mideast Regional, Frostburg State improved to 40-7 today with come-from-behind victories over Shenanodah and Heidelberg in elimination games on Friday in Washington, Pa. The Bobcats opened the day with a 7-2 triumph over Shenadoah, before posting a 9-6 victory against Heidelberg in the third and final game of the day at Ross Memorial Park. 

The victories propel the top-seeded Bobcats into Saturday's championship at 3:15 pm. The title game appearance will be the first for the Bobcats in six appearances in an NCAA Regional. Frostburg State will take on the winner of the noon matchup between third-seeded Heidelberg and fourth-seeded La Roche. All three teams remaining in the Mideast Regional have one loss heading into Saturday's games.

In the opening game of the day, the Bobcats broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run eighth inning to claim the 7-2 win against Shenandoah. 

Junior Nick Huff earned the win after tossing the final two innings in relief of senior starter Clayton Freimuth. Huff allowed just one hit and walked one for his second win of the season. Freimuth pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just one earned run. He struckout six and scattered just five hits. Lane Farmer had two RBIs for Frostburg State, while Zach Weiss went 3-for-4 with one RBI and scored once. 

In the 9-6 triumph over Heidelberg, Frostburg State rallied from a 6-1 deficit with a eight runnings over the final five innings.  

Zach Lawhorn made the most of his 14th appearance during his junior campaign, tossing 4.1 innings in relief and picking up his second win of the season. Heidelberg collected seven hits and six runs before Lawhorn stepped on the mound in the fourth inning. He inherited two runners and kept both from scoring while allowing just three hits. He fanned four and shut down the Student Princes that paved the way for the Bobcats to make their comeback.

Ricky Brady's three-run homer in the sixth inning, his 11th round-tripper of the season, proved critical, as it gave the Bobcats the lead for good, 7-6. Zach Keeler and Farmer tallied two RBIs apiece for Frostburg State, with Greg Schneider posting three hits and scoring twice.
