Frostburg State and Salisbury Post Mid-Week CAC Wins, Move Into First-Place Tie With Marymount

No. 11 Salisbury and No. 16 Frostburg State each posted CAC baseball wins to move into a first-place tie with Marymount on Wednesday, headlining a full slate of conference action. 

Wesley, Mary Washington and Southern Virginia also came away victorious in Wednesday's action. 

With just five games remaining in conference play, Salisbury, Frostburg State and Marymount are now tied atop the conference at 9-4. Wesley sits a game back at 8-5, while Christopher Newport also boasts a winning CAC mark at 7-6. 

In a key battle at the top of the standings, 11th-ranked Salisbury downed Marymount 4-1 at the SU Baseball Field.  Junior Pete Grasso earned his fourth win of the season for the Sea Gulls, pitching a dominant 6 1/3 innings. He gave up only three hits and one run, while notching five strikeouts. Grasso has now only allowed the one run in 15 innings pitch in CAC action this season. Grasso also led the team offensive with two hits and two RBIs, helping himself with the only runs he would need in the first inning. 

No. 16 Frostburg State rallied past York for a 6-5, 10-inning victory, its sixth straight triumph. The Bobcats trailed 4-1 following seven innings of play, but a three-run eighth and two more in the 10th lifted them to the win. In the 10th, K.J. Hockaday reached base for the Bobcats after being hit by a pitch and he scored from first when Brad Garrant roped a double to left center. Zach Keeler plated Garrant for the second run with a single up the middle.

Led by a two-homer, 5-RBI performance by rookie Marcus Begg, Southern Virginia downed 14th-ranked Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon, 10-5. The Captains suffered their fourth straight CAC loss and first-ever setback to the Knights, who improve to 4-9 in the CAC. 

Mary Washington junior Erik Jorgensen struck out 11 batters in six two-hit innings to lead the Eagles to a 9-4 win over St. Mary's at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 21-11 on the season, and 5-8 in CAC play. David Slupek singled three times and drove in two for the Eagles. 

Wesley captured its sixth straight win with an 8-3 road triumph at Penn State Harrisburg. Joseph Hummel (3 RBIs) and Mike Calvarese (2 RBIs) paced the Wolverines at the plate, while Andrew Weaver allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings to earn the win.
