Salisbury Downs Frostburg State, Claims 13th CAC Baseball Championship

Third-seeded Salisbury defeated top-seeded Frostburg State 9-8 in the championship game of the 2016 CAC Baseball Tournament on Saturday in Frostburg, Md., giving Salisbury its 13th overall CAC title and fourth in the last five years.

The win improves the Sea Gulls to 24-10 on the year and earns them the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. NCAA regional tournaments will begin on Wednesday, May 18.

Saturday's action opened with the completion of Friday's suspended elimination game between Frostburg State and fourth-seeded Wesley. Resuming play tied 13-13 in the bottom of the ninth, Frostburg State put together an 11-run top of the 10th to claim a 24-13 victory.

Game two on Saturday featured Salisbury and second-seeded Marymount, with the Sea Gulls edging the Saints 11-10 to eliminate them from the tournament.

It was then on to the championship round, with a rematch of last year's title game between Salisbury and Frostburg State. This time, it was the Sea Gulls who exacted a bit of revenge with their second one-run victory of the day, 9-8.

Salisbury jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a four-run top of the second. The Sea Gulls went on to lead from start to finish, but the Bobcats remained within striking distance and put together a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to fall just short.

Leadoff hitter Kyle Goodwin led the way for SU in the championship with two home runs, three hits, and four RBIs, leading a four-home run game for the Sea Gulls. Jake Dmiterchik and Scott Ardoin also recorded homers in the victory, while Pete Grasso earned the win on the mount with eight strikeouts in five innings, and Ian Scheidemann registered the save, pitching the final four frames.

Devin Bell led the Bobcats with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored, with Zach Keeler also blasting a round-tripper in the defeat.
