The 10th-ranked Salisbury baseball team saw its season come to an end on Friday in a 12-inning contest against Penn State Berks, falling 5-2 at PNC Field in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament.

With the loss, the CAC champion Sea Gulls conclude the year with a 26-12 record. The Salisbury seniors end their careers with four-straight NCAA Division III regional tournament appearances, three CAC championships, and two College World Series appearances.

After Berks recorded the only hit of the first inning, the Sea Gull capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Jake Dmiterchik doubled to lead off the frame, before two walks filled the bases. Sophomore Brad Keith came through with a sacrifice fly to plate Dmiterchik for the first run.

Senior Jeff Oster got the start for Salisbury and kept the Nittany Lions' offense at bay, only allowing four hits through the first four innings.

Berks was able to knot the score in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Tom Grablewski, but the Gulls quickly responded in the top of the sixth.

After senior Tyler Hrycak doubled down the left-field line, freshman Jack Barry singled to drive in the run and retake a 2-1 advantage.

Following a scoreless seventh, the Nittany Lions were again able to tie the game, picking up a run in the eighth. Dalton Hughes came through, slapping an RBI single down the left-field line, setting up the extra-inning showdown.

Senior Jon Schmedel entered in the eighth and pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a hit to help get the game to extras and give the Gulls a chance to extend their season.

In the 10th and 11th innings, neither team was able to come up with the winning run. Berks had the best chance to score in the 11th, with runners on the corners, but senior Connor Shockley kept the game going, forcing a fielder's choice to shortstop.

However, Salisbury was unable to come up with a run in the top of the 12th, before Berks came up with the big hit. Alex Doyle connected on a three-run home run to end the game and give the Nittany Lions the win.
