Christopher Newport Baseball Tops TCNJ in Extra Innings; Salisbury Falls to Southern Maine

Christopher Newport earned a one-run victory while Salisbuy fell by one run on day two of NCAA Baseball Regional play on Friday. CNU topped TCNJ 6-5 in extra innings, while Salisbury dropped a 1-0 decision to Southern Maine. 

At the NCAA South Regional in Holly Springs, N.C., CNU earned a 6-5 win over TCNJ in 10 innings NCAA Regional second round action. CNU freshman Conner Clark put together two of the biggest at-bats of his career in a thrilling extra-inning win over TCNJ on Friday night, as the nationally-ranked CNU baseball team escaped with a 6-5 win in 10 innings over the Lions. Clark tied the game in the bottom of the 7th after a 12-pitch at-bat and then delivered the game-winning single in the final inning. 

CNU advances in the winner's bracket of the South Regional, and will take on top-seeded Randolph-Macon at 11 a.m. on Saturday. 

In the NCAA New York Regional in Auburn, N.Y., Salisbury fell to Southern Maine 1-0 in its second game of the NCAA regional tournament on Friday night at Falcon Park.

The Sea Gulls (34-11) found themselves in their second pitchers' duel in as many days against the Huskies (29-13), as starters Austin Heenan and Ben Lambert went toe-to-toe for eight innings. Heenan struck out eight batters and only allowing three hits all game, but walked eight. A hit batter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning would eventually result in the lone run of the game after a double into the gap in the following at-bat scored the runner from first base.

 

The Sea Gulls will return to action on Saturday to face Baldwin Wallace in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
