Dylan Weber Named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week for Second Time in His Career

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After one of the most impressive starts of his career last Saturday afternoon, Christopher Newport senior Dylan Weber did enough to impress voters for the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his career. Weber earned a complete-game win over No. 5 Salisbury University to lift the nationally-ranked Captains to the 2024 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship.

The selection marks the fifth national player of the week in Christopher Newport history with Weber earning two of the five total nods. Earlier this season, sophomore teammate Brandon Cassedy became just the second National Pitcher of the Week in CNU history and the duo join John Corbin (2005) and Tommy Vitaletti (2016) as previous National Hitter of the Week honorees.

The pick for the left-handed starter was historic in the award's history as Weber and Cassedy became the first pair of teammates to earn National Pitcher of the Week in the same season since SUNY Maritime pitchers Nick Sarna and Trevor Cannella were each picked in 2014. It is only the fourth time since the inception of the award in 2003 that multiple pitchers from the same team were picked in the same year.

In addition to the NCBWA honor, Weber was also picked as the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season. Against the Sea Gulls, Weber was perfect into the fifth inning and then went the distance against one of Division III's top offenses, allowing one run on four hits with a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 6-1 win.

In the process of his historic performance, Weber took the reign as the conference strikeout king with 374 career punchouts while simultaneously moving into second all-time at Christopher Newport. He upped his Division III lead in strikeouts this season to 110 and became the first pitcher in program history to strike out over 100 batters in multiple seasons.

This season, Weber has registered an 8-1 overall record with a 1.48 earned run average. For good measure, he has added three saves in three relief appearances while holding opponents to a .176 batting average against over 73.0 innings pitched.

Weber and the rest of the CNU baseball team will return to action on Friday as they host either #2-seed Salisbury or #3-seed Mary Washington in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship game at 2:30 p.m.

Joining Weber among the honored players by the NCBWA this week were Benedictine's Kevin Bushnell as the National Hitter of the Week and Augustana's Riley Fuller as National Rookie of the Week.
