Christopher Newport Edges Salisbury 2-1 in Double Overtime, Claims First CAC Field Hockey Title

Top-seeded Christopher Newport outlasted second-seeded Salisbury 2-1 in double overtime on a score from Courtnie Greene in the 91st minute of action, handing the Captains their first-ever Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey title at Captains Turf Field.

With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 17-1 on the year and locks up the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The final bracket will be released Sunday at 11:30 p.m. on the NCAA website. The Sea Gulls fall to 12-4 with the loss, and now must hope to receive an at-large bid to NCAA's. The loss snapped SU's four-year CAC title winning streak.

Salisbury jumped on top early with a tally from Natalie Wilkinson off a feed from Lexi Butler just six minutes into the game.

CNU's Jackie Kotoriy evened the score early in the second period before the two teams engaged in a back-and-forth overtime slugfest that was polished off by Greene's strike. Captains' goalkeeper Stephanie McKinney matched her career-high with eight saves to stymie the Sea Gull attack.

CNU will be making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the program's Final Four run in 2013.
