Salisbury & CNU Set for CAC Field Hockey Championship Showdown

The 2019 CAC Field Hockey Tournament Championship matchup is finalized and will feature #1 Salisbury hosting #2 Christopher Newport on Saturday, Nov. 9th at 2 p.m. in Salisbury. The Sea Gulls have their eyes set on their 22nd league title, while the Captains attempt to capture their second conference crown.

Top-seeded Salisbury dominated all facets of its semifinal matchup with #4 York en route to a 3-0 victory. The Sea Gulls outshot the Spartans by a 17-1 margin and scored three, third-quarter goals from Meghan Jolikko, Jenna Partilla and McKenzie Mitchell to put the game out of reach. Jolikko registered five shots on goal in the win.

Christopher Newport, the No. 2 seed, jumped on the board early at the 2:24 mark of the first quarter when Abby Asuncion capitalized on an opportunity from Marcella Sabbagh to give CNU the early 1-0 lead. Courtesy Fiest extended the Captains advantage in the 37th minute on a dish from Asuncion to push the margin to 2-0. St. Mary's, the No. 3 seed, cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth quarter before the Captains shutdown the Seahawks to prevail with the 2-1 victory.

This will be the third consecutive year Salisbury and Christopher Newport will meet for the conference title. Salisbury defeated Christopher Newport by a 3-1 margin last year, while CNU was victorious in a dramatic 2-1 double overtime battle in 2017.
