CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the second week of the 2019 field hockey season. Salisbury sophomore forward McKenzie Mitchell earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Christopher Newport freshman defender Marcella Sabbagh claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: McKenzie Mitchell - Salisbury

Salisbury sophomore forward McKenzie Mitchell scored the game-winning penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter of No. 7 Salisbury's 2-1 win over No. 4 Messiah on Saturday. She also netted a goal in Salisbury's 3-0 win over Stevenson on Wednesday.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marcella Sabbagh - Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport freshman defender Marcella Sabbagh anchored the defense while playing all 60 minutes in the squad's 2-1 victory over No. 5 Johns Hopkins on Sunday. During that contest, she became just the fifth player in program history to record at least two defensive saves and a point in the same game. Her two defensive saves also equaled the most by a freshman in a single contest and marked only the fourth time a Captain registered a pair against a top-five opponent in program history. Her efforts also helped hold Hopkins to a season-low eight shots-on-goal. Meanwhile, on the offensive side, she recorded her first collegiate point after assisting on a penalty corner strike, which knotted the game at one. Earlier in the week, Sabbagh also helped Christopher Newport top DePauw, 3-1. Once again, she paced a defensive unit that slowed down the Tiger attack, allowing only four total shots during the game. That marked the fewest by DePauw in an outing since the 2017 campaign.

Bella Urcia scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Mary Washington came from behind to defeat DePauw, 3-2, on Saturday in the Eagles' lone game of the week...Gabrielle Corder led St. Mary's to a 2-0 week with victories over Bridgewater (2-0) and Eastern Mennonite (7-1). The Seahawks are now 3-0 on the young season. The Centreville, Maryland native finished with a team-best four points on the week off of two goals...Sophie Carlson led the Seahawk defense to a 7-1 victory over previously undefeated Eastern Mennonite on Saturday evening. The Seahawk defense, under the leadership of Carlson held the Royals offense to just three shots throughout the game. In addition, Carlson recorded a goal in the 56th minute of action....Christopher Newport's Bailey Miller scored a pair of goals during the week after finding the back of the cage in victories over DePauw and Johns Hopkins. In the latter battle against the fifth-ranked Blue Jays, she played all 60 minutes and scored the game-tying tally. Equally effective on the defensive end, she also added a crucial defensive save in the third quarter, which kept the game deadlocked at one. That marked the first time a Captain had a goal and a defensive save in the same game since 2017 and the first time that feat was accomplished against a top-10 foe since 2014. Two days earlier, Miller also posted her first goal of the year with a first-half tally during the squad's win over DePauw...York's Sarah Burton had a career game in the Spartans' 3-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Burton notched her first two career goals on her first two career shots as York picked up its first win of the year. Burton's first goal broke the 1-1 tie late in the second quarter against the Marlins. Her second goal gave York a two-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter. Burton's four point leads the Spartans in their three games...After not facing a single shot in Salisbury's 3-0 shutout over Stevenson on Wednesday, junior goalkeeper Dom Farrace was a major part of the win on Saturday over the fourth-ranked Messiah Falcons. Farrace tallied three saves, including made a stop on a penalty stroke in the first quarter that helped seal the victory...
