St. Mary's Runs Away In Second Half For 72-55 Victory Over Medgar Evers In First Round Of NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament

St. Mary's went on a 21-0 scoring spree, covering nearly nine minutes midway through the second half, on the way to earning a 72-55 victory over Medgar Evers in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.

SMC senior center Sam Burum tossed in a game-high 14 points and was one of four members of the 13th-ranked Seahawks (23-5) to score in double figures.

Senior point guard Alex Franz, the 2011 CAC Player of the Year, registered 10 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double, collecting a game-high nine caroms.

Mike Fitzpatrick added 12 scores and CAC Rookie of the Year Christian MacAuley totaled 10 points for the winners, who will host sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon in Saturday's second-round clash.  R-M advanced with a 62-59 OT victory over Alvernia in Friday's first contest.

Medgar Evers (17-11) was led by Robert Johnson with 12 points and James Gilmore with 11.

The visiting Cougars erased a one-point halftime deficit early in the second half and held a 44-42 advantage with 14:25 left in regulation on a Donnell Lazare hoop.

SMC then scored the next 21 points, taking the lead on a Spencer Devlin three-point goal with 12:49 left.  Devlin had six points during the streak.

A pair of Burum free throws with 5:42 left in the game lifted SMC's lead to 63-44, and the Seahawks ran out the clock to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years.

SMC's defense held M-E to just 33% from the field (18-for-54) and the hosts held a 43-31 advantage on the glass and had 13 steals.
