Five CAC Basketball Teams Set to Begin NCAA Tournament

A CAC record-tying five teams will continue their seasons in the 2016 NCAA Division III Basketball Tournaments beginning Friday. 

On the men's side, fourth-ranked Christopher Newport and 24th-ranked Salisbury are set to represent the CAC in the NCAA postseason. 

On the women's side, Mary Washington (No. 20 WBCA; No. 19 D3hoops.com), Marymount (No. 24 WBCA), and Christopher Newport (No. 21 WBCA; No. 23 D3hoops.com) will each compete in NCAA's, marking just the third time that the CAC has qualified three teams for the national postseason tournament. 


MEN'S PREVIEW

CNU (26-1) is ready for its 20th NCAA appearance and will host Lycoming (19-9) at 7:30 p.m. at the Freeman Center. NYU (20-5) and Brooklyn (22-6) meet in the opening game in Newport News at 5:30 p.m., with the winners set for a 7 p.m. showdown on Saturday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.

The Captains are riding a 17-game winning streak and won the CAC title last Saturday wth an overtime victory over Salisbury. CNU is 26-1 and has matched a school record for wins in a single season. The Captains were 18-0 in CAC action this year, becoming just the second team in the 26-year history of the league to go undefeated in winning the regular-season title.

Salisbury, the CAC runner-up, is making its seventh overall and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance after earning an at-large bid. The Sea Gulls (21-6) will take on Middlebury (17-10) in Friday's first game at 5:30 p.m. at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. Host Stockton (21-6) will take on Keene State (18-10) in the other first round contest at 7:30 p.m., with the winners set to meet Saturday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S PREVIEW

Mary Washington (24-4) will take on host Maryville (Tenn.) (24-3) in Friday's first round at 7:30 p.m., with Lynchburg (24-4) facing Birmingham Southern (24-3) in the other contest at 5:30 p.m. The CAC Champion Eagles will be competing in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time under head coach Deena Applebury and the 10th time overall. UMW is riding a six-game winning streak entering the NCAA postseason. 

Marymount (22-5), the CAC regular season champion and postseason runner-up, travels to Scranton, Pa. for a first-round matchup against Cabrini (19-9) at 5 p.m. Host Scranton (27-0) will meet WPI (24-4) in the other game at the John Long Center at 7 p.m. The Saints return to the NCAA postseason for the 17th time in program history and the second time under head coach Ashlee Rogers

Christopher Newport (22-4) will play on a neutral floor against St. Joseph's (Maine) (23-5) on the campus of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., with tip-off set for 5 p.m. Muhlenberg (24-2) hosts St. John Fisher (22-4) in the other first-round game at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The Captains return to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in program history and the third time in four seasons under head coach Bill Broderick
