York Tops Christopher Newport 82-73, Claims Third CAC Men's Basketball Title

Second-seeded York defeated top-seeded Christopher Newport 82-73 to secure its third CAC men's basketball championship on Saturday at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va. The Spartans other CAC titles occurred in 2011-12 and 2004-05.

With the victory, York (23-4) earns the CAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next weekend. CNU (21-6), meanwhile, now must wait until Monday's selection show on NCAA.com at 12:30 p.m. in hopes of receiving an at-large bid. The loss ended CNU's two-year reign atop the conference.

The Spartans opened a lead of 12 in the opening half and were ahead at halftime, 35-26. CNU battled back by out-scoring York, 23-11, in the first eight and a half minutes of the second. The Spartans then used a 19-3 run to take control of the game midway through the second half. York went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:50 of the game to secure the road win.

All five starters reached double figures for York, led by senior Blayde Reich's 25 points and six rebounds, including 16 points in the second half. Jason Bady added 16 points, five boards, and four steals for the Spartans in the victory. CNU was led by freshman Brock Geiman, who posted a career-high 21 points with 18 coming in the second half.
