Christopher Newport's Aaron McFarland has been selected first team All-America by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The announcement was made Thursday morning.
McFarland, a product of Richmond, was the Player of the Year in the Capital Athletic Conference this season and was named the Middle Atlantic Region Player of the Year earlier this week. This marks the third straight season a Christopher Newport men's basketball standout has achieved All-America status, and McFarland becomes the 14th CNU player to be recognized in the 51-year history of the program.
A sharp-shooting guard, McFarland led the Captains in scoring this season and recorded 502 points for an average of 17.3 per game. He poured in a career-high 35 points in CNU's victory over Mary Washington in the CAC semi-finals, and led the squad in scoring 15 times. He set new school records for three-point field goals (266) and games played (118), and was the top free throw shooter in CNU history, making 86 percent of his attempts and converting on his last 29 at the charity stripe.
McFarland, a graduate of Massaponax High School, is the ninth-leading scorer in CNU men's basketball history, concluding his career with 1,552 points. He was a part of the most successful senior class in program history, leading the Captains to a 99-20 record over the last four seasons and helping the Captains advance to the NCAA Tournament the last three years. CNU reached the Final Four, Sweet 16, and second round over the last three years.
Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division III, these student-athletes represent the most outstanding basketball players across America in their division. McFarland will play in Salem on Saturday in the Reese's Senior All-Star game prior to the National Championship game.
