#9 Christopher Newport Falls to #6 Swarthmore in NCAA Men's Basketball National Semifinals

Ninth-ranked Christopher Newport's incredible season came to an end on Friday (March 15) in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Semifinals following a 70-63 defeat at the hands of #6 Swarthmore. The game was contested at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Arena in Ft. Wayne, Ind.

CNU trailed 36-29 at the halftime break but came out with a pair of triples in the second half from Adrian Beasley and Marcus Carter. The Captains tied it up at 36 all with 16:34 remaining to cap a 7-0 run to start the second half before Swarthmore posted its first points of the break. However, the Garnet responded with a 7-0 surge of their own to extend the league once again. The Captains cut the deficit to four with 45.9 seconds to play were unable to inch any closer as CNU fell in the national semifinal contest.

CNU senior guard Marcus Carter capped a sensational career with a game-high 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Swarthmore shot 49 percent for the contest, while CNU managed only 32 percent from the field in the loss.

Christopher Newport finishes the season with a 29-4 overall record, including the 2018-19 Capital Athletic Conference Championship.
