Wesley Junior Chris Osberg Hopes To Defend Individual Crown and Lead Wolverines To Second-Straight CAC Golf Title

Wesley Junior Chris Osberg Hopes To Defend Individual Crown and Lead Wolverines To Second-Straight CAC Golf Title

Wesley College won the first CAC Golf championship in 2008, and went on to gain a bid to the NCAA Championship, where the Wolverines placed seventh in the final team standings.

The Wolverines will certainly be among the favorites when the teams assemble for the 2009 CAC Championship Saturday (4/25) and Sunday (4/26) at Piney Branch C.C. in Hempstead, Md.

Wesley won the 2008 crown with a two-day team total of 632, outdistancing host Stevenson (then known as Villa Julie) by 21 strokes (653) for the title.  York placed third in the team standings with 664, followed by Marymount (714) and Hood (741).

Wesley junior Chris Osberg is the defending individual champion, having carded a two-day total of 154 to win the first CAC title.

But Wolverines coach Rick McCall will have to replace the other five golfers who finished among the Top 10 in last year's championship, including Andrew Guyer, who was tragically killed earlier this spring by a suspected drunk driver while crossing the street after attending a West Virginia University basketball game.

Here is a look at each team heading into Saturday's championship action.

HOOD

Sophomore Andy Alger owns Hood's lowest stroke average at 84.6 and also posted the Blazers' lowest round of the season (78) against Stevenson back in September. Classmate Evan Chaney was Hood's top finisher in its only competition of the spring, carding an 85 at the Messiah College Falcon Classic. Hood will look to improve on its fifth-place finish from last season's inaugural championship.

MARYMOUNT

Marymount is looking to build on its strong finish at the York Spring tournament going into the conference championship tournament.  The Saints finished second there (of 10 teams) with Kevin Thomsen and Tom Donovan both finishing in a tie for second place among the individual golfers.  Look for both senior golfers along with Ryan Fitzmeyer (another senior) to lead Marymount in the CAC tournament.  Thomsen was CAC Athlete of the Week four times this year (fall and spring) and Donovan shared the honor once with Thomsen.

STEVENSON

Stevenson finished second behind Wesley who won its first conference championship. Junior Matt Lukehart is one of the individual favorites this year after finishing third a year ago and earning All-CAC First Team honors. Senior Kevin Motz was named to the All-CAC Second Team after placing ninth while senior Cliff Mangle looks to improve upon his 16th place finish from a year ago.

WESLEY

Wesley will be seeking its 12th straight conference title.  The Wolverines won the first ever CAC title a year ago after claiming 10 straight Pennsylvania Athletic Conference titles.  Defending individual champion Chris Osberg will lead the Wolverines and currently paces the CAC in scoring average.  Rob Zimmerer, the CAC Co-Player of the Week, and Jeff Owsik are coming off season bests at Bent Creek.  Wesley ranks second in team scoring at 321 per round.

YORK

York enters the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference championships having won two of their last three tournaments. The Spartans, who finished third last year, bring a talented core of players to this year's championships. Junior Cody Trabert brings a 79.2 stroke average to the championships while freshman Andrew Schmehl and Adam Dupler are the other two Spartans with averages in the 70's as Schmehl is at 79.3 and Dupler sports a mark of 79.8. Senior Jimmy DeCastro's average is 80.0 while the Spartans' lone returning All-CAC golfer, senior Shane Bernard, rounds out the starting lineup with his 80.9 average.
