Wesley Looks To Defend The CAC Golf Championship In 2011

Wesley’s Robert Ehrhardt and Clayton Bunting both won Rookie of the Year awards during the 2010 golf season and led the Wolverines to the CAC title.  They hope to lead Wesley to another conference crown in 2011, which would be the third in the four-year history of CAC golf.

The Wolverines rallied from a one-stroke deficit after the first day of conference championship play to win the 2010 CAC crown by 12 strokes over York.  Bunting had the second-lowest 18-hole score and third-lowest 36-hole score to earn the conference Rookie of the Year award and lead the Wolverines to the championship.

Ehrhardt, who like Bunting was a 2010 All-CAC first-team honoree, was named the regional Rookie of the Year for his play during the 2010 season.

York, which won the 2009 conference championship, will challenge with three 2010 all-stars, including 2010 CAC Co-Player of the Year Andrew Schmehl and second-team picks Adam Dupler and Adam Burkhart.  Dupler was the CAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in leading the Spartans to the 2009 title.

Hood, Marymount and Stevenson, the host of the 2011 championship tournament (April 15-16), have been building their lineups to challenge Wesley and York for the title. Marymount’s Peter Johns is a returning second-team All-CAC selection while Stevenson’s Brian Spinazzola, Ben Lukehart and Hood’s Evan Chaney were picked as CAC Golfers of the Week during the Fall 2010 season

The season opens March 21, when York competes in the Dickinson Invitational.

Here is a look at each team heading into the Spring 2011 championship season.

HOOD's trio of four-year letterwinners look to make a statement in the conference this season as they enter their final seasons as collegiate linksmen. Evan Chaney was a second-team all-conference selection in 2009 and Aaron Prescott was the CAC rookie of the year in 2008. Andy Alger has also been consistent during his Hood career for head coach Tom Dickman. The Blazers begin the spring slate April 4 at Lebanon Valley College.

MARYMOUNT looks to improve on the end to its Fall season after showing marked improvement during each round of the final three tournaments of the semester. Sophomores Peter Johns and Nick Ryerson continue to pace the Saints at the top of the card while freshman Jeremy Brenton’s development from the start of the year will help MU as well.  Marymount faces a trio of events in Pennsylvania before closing out the year at the CAC Championships.

STEVENSON looks to capture its first CAC Golf Championship after finishing third a year ago. The Mustangs averaged a 330.4 scoring average as a team in the fall and are led by newcomers Brian Spinnazola and Ben Lukehart. A freshman, Lukehart led the team with a 78.4 scoring average in the fall while Spinnazola averaged a 79.0 in his first season with the team after four seasons on the baseball team. Sophomore Justin Hughes returns for his second season after finishing 16th at the 2010 CAC Golf Championship.

WESLEY will look to defend its CAC Championship behind the play of the defending Mid-Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year Robert Ehrhardt and CAC Rookie of the Year Clayton Bunting.  The Wolverines will look for sophomores Brady Demey and Erik Shellenhamer and freshman Matt Lank to round out the lineup.

YORK enters the spring campaign looking to improve on an uncharacteristic fall season that saw the team finish no higher than fourth in their five fall events. The Spartans did not have a player average in the 70s during the fall as Adam Burkhart paced York with an average of 81.2. Juniors Adam Dupler and Andrew Schmehl, a pair of two-time All-CAC selections and former CAC Players of the Year, averaged 82.6 and 83.3 during the fall for the Spartans. Those numbers are off their career averages as Schmehl boasts a 78.2 career stroke average while Dupler is at 79.5 strokes per round. The Spartans open their spring schedule on March 21 at the Dickinson College Invitational in Carlisle.
