One day after announcing the historic football partnership between the Capital Athletic Conference and the New Jersey Athletic Conference, Frostburg State University President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, chair of the CAC Presidents Council, announced the addition of the NJAC’s New Jersey City University and William Paterson University as associate members for CAC men’s golf, effective immediately.

"The NJAC and CAC are developing a strong working relationship because of the academic and athletic reputations of the member institutions," said Frostburg State University President Dr. Jonathan Gibralter, chair of the CAC President’s Council. "The partnership will prove to be beneficial of each conference."

Monday, the NJAC announced the addition of Christopher Newport, Frostburg State, Salisbury and Wesley as associate members in football, beginning in 2015. CAC member Southern Virginia, which had already been approved for NJAC affiliate football membership beginning in 2014, was promoted to associate membership in 2015.

Today, the addition of New Jersey City and William Paterson will give the CAC seven men’s golf teams for the first time since it was added as a championship sport in 2007. CAC full member institutions that sponsor varsity men’s golf teams include Christopher Newport University, Marymount (Va.) University, Penn State Harrisburg, Wesley College and York College of Pa.

"We are pleased to join the Capital Athletic Conference as an associate member for men’s golf," said William Paterson President Dr. Kathleen Waldron. "Thanks to this partnership, our William Paterson golfers will be able to enjoy the same benefits of conference membership as our other student-athletes, competing for a conference championship and becoming eligible for postseason honors. I would like to thank William Paterson Director of Athletics Sabrina Grant and Capital Athletic Conference Commissioner Tom Byrnes for their efforts in making this new arrangement a reality."

New Jersey City University, located in Jersey City, N.J., and William Paterson, located in Wayne, N.J., will be eligible for all CAC individual awards and compete for the team championship April 18-19, 2014, at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg, Pa.

New Jersey City and William Paterson both began their men’s golf programs in 2011 and have played as independents because the NJAC does not sponsor men’s golf as a championship sport. Tim Black is in his third season as coach at NJCU while the Pioneers are coached by Brian Woods.

York is the defending CAC champion and has been a member of the CAC for men’s golf, along with Marymount and Wesley, since 2007. Christopher Newport and Penn State Harrisburg joined the CAC as full members this season.

"This is the first time the CAC has offered associate memberships in any sport," Byrnes said. "The leadership of the CAC has been searching for ways to satisfy the sport sponsorship needs of the membership. In the last two days, the NJAC and CAC have combined to enhance a pair championship sports."
