Three Christopher Newport Golfers Earn PING All-Region Accolades

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Christopher Newport golf team had three players represented on the 2016 Division III PING All-Region teams. Junior Harry Nodwell picked up his first career nod as an All-Region golfer, senior Sam Robinson his second and Matt DiSalvo earned his third recognition.

DiSalvo becomes the first three-time All-Region selection in CNU history while Robinson is the only other player to earn the distinction twice in his career. Nodwell becomes the sixth different Captain to earn PING All-Region honors. CNU was one of only two teams to boast three representatives to the All Mid-Atlantic Region, and one of just nine teams nationally to boast as many as three total All-Region selections. The trio led Christopher Newport in stroke average this season, and all three were All-Conference picks as well.

After posting the finest average of his career, DiSalvo closed out his tenure at Christopher Newport with a record third selection to the PING All-Region team. He played in seven events his senior year, posting a 75.5 average over 17 rounds, while registering four top five finishes. The 2015 CAC Player of the Year had a dominant fall season, posting a second place finish at the Bay Creek Invitational, tie for 3rd place at the Ted Keller Memorial and a tie for 4th in the 93-player field at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.

With the recognition, Nodwell has now collected All-Region honors for both men's soccer and golf as the multi-sport athlete finished the year with a 75.8 stroke average over 13 rounds of play. He finished with three top ten finishes in five events this spring and registered five of the top 12 single round performances of the year for the Captains. A semifinalist for the Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year award, Nodwell posted an impressive three-under performance at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, finishing tied for fifth in the 150-player field. He also finished 6th at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate to open the spring with a one-over 145.

Rounding out the Captains' All-Region selections for 2016 is the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year and tournament medalist, Sam Robinson. The graduate student played in 19 rounds this season, participating in eight different events for the Captains. He posted a 76.1 stroke average and finished in the top ten three times, including the win of the CAC Championship. He also notched an 8th place effort at the Ted Keller Memorial and a tie for third in the Bay Creek Invitational this fall. Robinson added a strong performance at Jekyll Island, tying for 20th with an Even par 216 after three rounds.

Robinson ranks sixth all-time in career stroke average with a 76.51 mark after 45 rounds of play. He finished his career just two one-hundredths of a point behind Scott Scovil's career mark of 76.49. In addition to his success on the course, Robinson was also named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar this week, becoming just the second player to earn that honor.

The Captains won their third straight Capital Athletic Conference championship in 2016, earning the league's first ever automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The appearance was the first for the team since 2012, and the Captains finished tied for 20th overall.
