After the second round of action at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships, the Christopher Newport Captains missed the cut by just seven strokes and finished the event in a tie for 20th overall. CNU wrapped day two at the Mendon Golf Club with a 24-over 308, posting a 36-hole score of 50-over par in Rochester, N.Y.

CNU finished their trip to nationals with a two-day score of 622 (314-308), tied with Middlebury for 20th in the 41-team field. The top 15 teams, and six individuals not on those 15 teams, will advance to play in the third and fourth rounds at the Midvale Country Club on Thursday and Friday.

Four of the five CNU starters finished at six-over for the day, as Sam Robinson, Harry Nodwell, Joey Corlett, and Charlie Peavley all carded 77's. CNU's day one leader, David Rabilwasn't far behind with a nine-over 80.

Nodwell and Rabil tied for the team's best finish on the individual leaderboard, tied for 59th with a two-day score of 154 (+11). Starting on the back nine, Nodwell maintained his position near the top of the leaderboard through his first 11 holes at just one-over for the day. A double-bogey on the Par 3 third hole tripped up the CNU junior, however, and he would go on to finish the day at 6-over. Rabil was up-and-down all day, leading the Captains in birdies with four, but also posting 10 bogey holes. The freshman impressed overall in his first career NCAA Championship appearance, tied for the team lead with an 11-over effort. Nodwell posted back-to-back 77's while Rabil went 74-80 for his 154.

Peavley played the most consistent round for CNU on day two, pouring in 12 pars with six bogeys. He pieced together a streak of six straight pars while closing the day on a run that included eight of 10 even holes. His two day line saw him finish tied for 103rd with a 15-over 158 (81-77).

The second CNU freshman in the starting lineup, Corlett, bounced back after a tough first round to piece together a strong performance on day two. He opened up the day with a birdie on the 515-yard Par 5 10th hole, and added five pars on the back nine. After making the turn, he picked up three more pars and added his second birdie of the day on his final hole, a 457-yard Par 4. The Ashburn, Va. native tied for 140th on the individual leaderboard with an 18-over 161 (84-77).

Rounding out the CNU performances was Robinson, playing in his final collegiate tournament. The Captains' senior made the turn at 6-over, but played a stellar final nine in an effort to get CNU in position to make the cut. After a par and a bogey to start, Robinson then ran off five straight pars, birdied the 374-yard Par 4 8th hole and added his 11th par of the day on the ninth hole. The strong finish moved him up to a tie for 122nd individually, firing a 16-over 159 (82-77).

As a team, Christopher Newport tied for the fourth most pars in the first two rounds, pouring in 101 over the first 36 holes. Peavley and Nodwell led the Captains with 24 pars over two days, while Robinson added 22. Rabil's six birdies were a team high and were just three shy of the tournament high after Wednesday.
