CAC Spring Championships Begin This Weekend

The spring 2016 CAC championship season commences this week with the golf championship and the opening round of men's and women's tennis. The remaining CAC championships - baseball, softball, track & field, and lacrosse - will begin and/or take place next week.

The CAC Golf Championship opens up play today at Bay Creek Golf Course in Cape Charles, Va. This year will mark the first time that the CAC champion earns an automatic NCAA bid, and will also feature a three-round format for the first time. The tournament will conclude on Sunday. First round tennis action begins Friday on the men's side as No. 4 Southern Virginia (10-9, 4-3 CAC) hosts No. 5 St. Mary's (7-9, 3-4 CAC) for a 4 p.m. showdown. Southern Virginia earned a playoff bid for the first time in 2016, while St. Mary's returns to the CAC postseason for the third time in the last four years after missing out on last year's tournament. Southern Virginia edged St. Mary's 5-4 on April 2 in the regular season matchup.

The women's tennis tournament will open on Saturday, as No. 4 St. Mary's (8-8, 4-3) plays host to No. 5 York (8-4, 3-4). St. Mary's is aiming for its ninth straight trip to the CAC semifinals, while York returns to the postseason after missing it last season. St. Mary's defeated York 5-4 on April 4 in the regular season match.
