Four Christopher Newport Golfers Named to PING All-Region Team

PING All-Region Teams

NORMAN, Okla. -- Four Christopher Newport men's golfers have been named PING All-Region selections by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Senior Harry Nodwell, sophomores David Rabil, Joey Corlett and Kurt Funkhouser represented the Captains and the Capital Athletic Conference on the Mid-Atlantic All-Region squad.

Division III PING All-Region honorees were announced by the GCAA for six regions - Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Great Lakes, Central, and West.

Nodwell becomes just the third Captain in program history to earn the All-Region distinction twice in his career after collecting the nod as a junior as well. One of the most decorated multi-sport athletes in Christopher Newport history, Nodwell has now collected All-Region honors for both men's soccer and golf in five of a possible six seasons of play. This year, he earned first team All-Conference honors for the second time, capping three total selections in his three-year tenure. He ranks second on the team in scoring average with a 73.9 mark, and currently stands as the all-time leader in career average with a 74.6 mark.

Despite playing just in the spring, Nodwell ranked second on the squad in top five finishes, with three in four events played. The Devon, England native helped CNU capture it's fourth straight conference championship this season, earning a trip to the NCAA National Championships.

Also a member of the conference championship squad were Rabil and Corlett, who finished 1-2 in the final standings of the league tournament. Both players garner their first career All-Region selection after posting terrific second-year seasons. Rabil, the Conference Player of the Year, has had a year that will go down in Christopher Newport lore as one of the finest all time. He won half of the tournaments he played in this season and shattered the program record for scoring average with a 72.4 mark this season. Along the way, Rabil was named a semifinalist for the Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award and a first team All-Conference selection. The sophomore southpaw also broke the school record for low single round scoring with a seven-under 64 at the Golfweek Fall Invitational. It was one of his team-best eight rounds at par or better.

Corlett followed up his CAC Rookie of the Year season with another spectacular run through his sophomore year. For the second straight year, Corlett finished second at the CAC Tournament, garnering first team All-Conference honors and becoming just the fifth player in program history to earn first team honors multiple times during his career. The sophomore finished second on the team with three rounds at par or better during the 2016-17 season, while capturing three top ten finishes in seven events. He carries a 75.8 stroke average into the national championship event, lowering his career mark to 77.4.

Finally, Funkhouser rounds out the four All-Region selections for CNU in 2016-17, after helping bolster the talented Captains lineup all year long. In the first tournament of the year, Funkhouser finished tied for second at the Bay Creek Invitational, and he would go on to add a fifth-place finish at the VSGA Intercollegiate Championship. He appeared in seven events this season and fired a 76.8 stroke average, ranked fourth on the team.

The Captains won their fourth straight Capital Athletic Conference championship in 2017, earning the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
