Mary Washington Names Sam Oglesby as Men's and Women's Golf Coach

The University of Mary Washington has hired Sam Oglesby, pending final Human Resources approval, as the head men's and women's golf coach for the 2017-18 season, according to Director of Athletics Ken Tyler. Oglesby, who served as assistant coach for the men's program in its inaugural season in 2016-17, will take over duties immediately.

"We're very pleased to welcome Sam Oglesby as our Head Coach for Men's and Women's Golf", said Tyler on Tuesday. "This new position aligns with our plan to have a single coach overseeing both programs.  Sam is a UMW graduate and a military veteran, and he brings significant leadership and golf experience to this role. He will be an outstanding mentor and leader for our men's and women's golfers and we look forward to much success under Sam's direction."

Tyler continued, "We would like to recognize the outstanding job that Rod Wood did in recruiting and coaching our inaugural men's golf team over the last two years. The team exceeded expectations and is on very solid footing moving forward. We're glad that Rod will remain a part of our department as Director of Athletic Facilities/Senior Lecturer. We would also like to recognize Katie Wimmer, who recruited the student-athletes for our inaugural women's golf program."

"It is an honor for me to return to my alma mater and to serve as the Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach", said Oglesby. "I am excited to continue to build on the men's team success and achievements, and look forward to being part of the inaugural year for the women's team. It really is a great day to be an Eagle!"

Oglesby has been no stranger to Mary Washington since graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business, serving under Wood for one season in the 1990s as a basketball assistant, and again this year in men's golf.

A 1999 graduate of UMW, he holds a masters degree from National University in San Diego, Cal. His playing experience includes wins in three events on the Golf Channel Amateur Tour in Northern Virginia, and medalist honors on the Golf Channel Tour in his National Age Flight in 2012.

He has served as a member of the Marine Corps golf team (West Coast and Japan) from 1986-2002, serving as coach of the squad from 1999-2002.

He couples experience of 15-plus years of golf instruction with more than 27 years of instruction as an officer in the Marine Corps. He is a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Instructor, United States Golf Teachers Federation Certified Coach, United States Golf Teachers Federation Certified Instructor (Level III), as well as PGA of America Apprentice program and USGA Rules Certification completion.

He holds membership at the Army Navy Country Club.
