Second-Seeded Frostburg State Unable To Recover From Early Deficit In 15-10 Loss At Top-Seeded Albright In ECAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Game

Frostburg State surrendered six goals in the opening quarter of play and never recovered in a 15-10 loss to Albright in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Region Championship game, Sunday afternoon.

Host and top-seeded Albright (15-4) ran out to a 4-0 lead and led 6-1 after the first quarter on its way to the title.

The early deficit proved too much for the second-seeded Bobcats (13-7) as they were able to pull within three, 10-7 and 11-8, in the third quarter.

FSU sophomore Spencer Barnett scored off a pass from classmate Devin Colegrove with 6:52 showing on the third quarter clock. Moments later, junior Ryan Serio scored for the third time and pulled FSU to within three again at 11-8 with 3:39 left in the third.

Albright essentially sealed the victory with the contest's next four goals. The hosts scored the final two of the third and the first two of the final stanza for a 15-8 lead with 10:34 left in regulation.

Freshman Nick Stailey found Serio for a goal at 4:15 and Stailey scored off a pass from freshman Spenser Love at 3:26 as the Bobcats pulled within five at the final horn.

Despite the 6-1 deficit after the first quarter, Frostburg hung tough and played even with the Lions over the final three periods. Both squads scored nine goals over the final three frames.

Albright, which defeated Lebanon Valley in the tournament semifinals to get to the title game, held a decisive 60-31 advantage in shots, including a 28-13 edge in the first half. The Lions attempted 18 shots in the final quarter, won 3-of-5 faceoffs and kept the ball away from Frostburg.

As a team, the Bobcats won 18-of-29 faceoffs on the afternoon and scooped up 40 ground balls. They were just 10-of-20 on clears attempts and had 30 turnovers.

A day after scoring seven goals with two assists, Serio poured in a team-best four goals to lead the attack. Barnett added two scored, while Stailey and Love added one goal and one assist each.

Junior Tyler Haines came up big in the cage, stopping 21 shots, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Junior Billy Lark won all 18 faceofs (18-of-26) and picked up a game-high seven ground balls.

Ryan Turner finished with four goals to lead Albright. Tournament MVP TJ Holston finished with one goal and two assists, while Jordan DiZenzo made eight saves in goal for the Lions.
