Salisbury Men's Soccer Team And St. Mary's Women's Soccer Team Honored For Academics By NSCAA

The Salisbury University men's soccer team and the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team were among those honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for their academic success during the 2007-08 academic year.

The Salisbury men and St. Mary's women were among the 364 teams nationwide that met an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year.

This is the third time the Sea Gulls have won this award since the NSCAA College Men's Team Academic Award since the award was instituted in 1996. The first-ever award in SU program history was in 2002 followed by a repeat performance in '03.

The Sea Gulls posted a team GPA of 3.10 and are one of 104 men's programs from all divisions (I, II, III) to earn this honor. The highest GPA was 3.48 earned by Case Western Reserve (Ohio) and Amherst (Mass.) College. In the state of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University (3.26) was represented as was Loyola College of Maryland (3.00). Salisbury is the only program from the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) to earn a men's team award this season.

St. Mary's, boasting a 3.35 team grade-point average, was the only women's team from the CAC to be honored on the 2007-08 NSCAA academic list.   It's the second-straight year SMC's team was honored on the academic list.

The Seahawks were also honored as one of five NCAA soccer teams (men and women, all three divisions) to win the NSCAA Gold ethics award for not getting any yellow or red cards during the 2007-08.

Of the 364 teams honored, 264 are women's teams and 59 programs were represented on both the men's and women's teams.
