Marymount Preparing To Open New Turf Facility Overlooking Potomac River For Soccer And Lacrosse Teams In Fall 2011
The Marymount University men’s and women’s soccer
and lacrosse teams will soon have a great new home field!
Construction has been moving along fast on a synthetic-turf playing field at Long Bridge Park, a new facility with panoramic views of the Potomac River.
The lighted field is scheduled to be ready for use starting in fall 2011. It will be one of four sports fields at the 28-acre Long Bridge Park.
The park takes its name from the bridge over the Potomac River used by British troops in 1812 to cross from the District of Columbia to burn down the port of Alexandria.
Marymount and Arlington County signed a partnership agreement in 2009 to develop the new field. The agreement will also allow the University to hold summer sports camps at Long Bridge Park.
Dr. Chris Domes, Marymount’s vice president for Student Development and Enrollment Management, says, “We’re very excited about this project and believe it is a mutually beneficial partnership. Marymount has long needed a permanent home for our soccer and lacrosse teams. At the same time, the community will benefit by having use of this additional field.”
For many years, MU’s teams have been playing at various fields around Arlington. The Saints will be happy to have their own permanent home field with great views of DC just across the river!
