York Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss Vs. DeSales In Opening Round Of 2011 NCAA Tournament

DeSales scored the only goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to defeat CAC champion York, 1-0, in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.

The Spartans (11-6-5) played most of the game shorthanded after starting goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh drew a red card in the 18th minute on a play outside the penalty area.

In the 88th minute, DeSales moved the ball down the right side.  YCP reserve keeper Steve Handy tried to make a play on the ball inside the box, but DeSales winger Matthew Germscheid lifted a shot over the sliding keeper and into the back of the net for the win.

DeSales outshot the Spartans, 17-15.  Handy was credited with four stops while DeSales keeper Colin Sulpizio denied YCP three times.

It was the seventh-straight year YCP advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament, but the second-straight year the Spartans were shut out in the first round.  Last year, Kenyon won a first-round game at York, also by a 1-0 margin.
