Home Teams Advance In CAC Men's Soccer Playoffs As Frostburg State And York Register Victories

Frostburg State's men's soccer team, which has lost only two games all year, turned back Wesley by a 2-0 count Sunday in the opening round of the 2011 CAC men's soccer playoffs.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champion York fended off a stubborn challenge by Stevenson, gaining a 3-2 decision to join Frostburg State in advancing to Wednesday's semifinal round.

Wednesday's semifinal games (delayed one day from the original schedule because of the weekend snowstorm in the region) will feature fourth-seeded FSU traveling to top-seeded Salisbury while third-seeded York visits second-seeded Mary Washington.

The semifinal winners will face off Saturday, at the home field of the higher-seeded team, to play for the 2011 CAC crown.

At Frostburg, Md., the host Bobcats turned in a dominating performance and earned a 2-0 victory over Wesley.

The Frostburg offense had multiple chances in the first half but were unable to beat Wesley goalkeeper Mark Mattern.  The Bobcats registered 12 first half shots and forced Mattern to make 6 saves.  Frostburg's fast-breaks were limited by five offsides calls in the first frame.

Ryan Russell got the Bobcat offense rolling with just under seven minutes gone by in the second half.  Russell received a pass from Bryan Whitmore on the right side and blasted a shot to the left side of the net to make the score 1-0.

Frostburg kept the pressure on the Wolverine defense throughout the second half as they registered ten more shot attempts.  Shawn Baker iced the game for the Bobcats with three minutes left to play, as he eluded two defenders and found the back of the net.

Abiye Jack made three saves in the game to earn the shutout victory.

At York, Pa., the Spartans stopped Stevenson, 3-2, to improve to 9-5-5 overall. The Mustangs conclude their season with a mark of 7-10-1 overall.

The Mustangs opened the scoring just 13:18 into the game as Yianni Sarioglou struck a free kick that caromed off Spartan goalkeeper Ethan Kavanagh. Kevin Rama collected the rebound and stuffed home a shot, giving the Mustangs the early lead.

That lead would be short lived as the Spartans drove down the field on the kick off. York got the ball to the end line where sophomore Matt Yackel put a serve into the box where classmate Taylor Brummitt snapped a header into the goal from the back side of the box, tying the game at one just 36 seconds after the Mustangs took the lead.

The Green and White took the lead just over six minutes later as junior Justin Facer drove home a penalty kick at the 19:42 mark. The Spartans earned the opportunity as Brummitt drew the foul inside the box.

Stevenson drew even just over ten minutes into the second half as Rama scored again. This time Bradley Davis flicked a ball into the box and Rama beat an on-rushing Kavanagh for the Mustangs' second goal.

That lead lasted less than 30 seconds. Brummitt was in the middle of the scoring again as the sophomore got the ball, dribbled to the 18 and then played a ball to the left that junior Cody Pearson finished past a prone Mustang goalie Ryan Flannelly for the goal.
