Salisbury Downs St. Mary's, 2-0, for Eighth CAC Men's Soccer Crown

Top-seeded Salisbury claimed its ninth CAC Men's Soccer Championship in program history with a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded St. Mary's on Saturday at the SU Soccer Complex in Salisbury, Md.

The victory sends the Sea Gulls (13-3-3) to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and fourth time in the last five years. This is Salisbury's first CAC crown since 2008. St. Mary's, the first-ever No. 6 seed to reach the CAC title game, ends its season at 9-9-2 overall.

Salisbury got on the board in the 13th minute after earning a penalty kick on the edge of the box. Junior Leslie Umunna buried the penalty kick for his seventh goal of the year, giving the Sea Gulls an early 1-0 advantage.

Back-and-forth play ensued for the majority of the contest, as both sides produced multiple quality looks at net. The Sea Gulls added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute, when Joshua Lord redirected a Brad Martinelli shot into the back of the net for the 2-0 final margin of victory for SU. The goal was the first of Lord's career.

With the shutout victory, Drew Staedeli and the Salisbury defense has not allowed a goal in 570 minutes of play. Staedeli posted six saves on the day for the Sea Gulls, while St. Mary's goalkeeper Zack Haussler also had six stops, including a penalty kick early in the second half that kept the Seahawks within a one-goal deficit.
