Mary Washington and St. Mary's Move on to CAC Men's Soccer Semifinals

CAC Men's Soccer Tournament Bracket

Mary Washington and St. Mary's advanced to the CAC Men's Soccer semifinals with first round triumphs on Saturday. Fourth-seeded Mary Washington outlasted Christopher Newport in penalty kicks, 9-8, in dramatic fashion, while sixth-seeded St. Mary's edged Wesley 3-2 on the road.

Following Saturday's action, the CAC semifinal round is now set. Wednesday's matchups will feature No. 6 St. Mary's at No. 2 York, and No. 4 Mary Washington at No. 1 Salisbury. Game times have yet to be announced.

In a rematch of last year's first-round matchup in Fredericksburg, Va., Mary Washington and Christopher Newport played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer at UMW's Battleground Complex. In the penalty kick shootout, the Captains took an early 3-2 lead. Then, a score from UMW's Gary Foley, a save from goalkeeper Matthew Spencer, and a score from Jacob Burke put the Eagles up 4-3.

UMW and CNU went back and forth the rest of the way until they reached a 7-7 tie. The next 6 kickers failed to find the net. UMW's Jack Nelson ended the drought and put the Eagles up 8-7. After a goal from CNU to tie the score at 8-8, Colin Travis scored to give the Eagles a 9-8 lead. Spencer then made another spectacular save to secure the victory for the Eagles.

In Dover, Del., St. Mary's overcame a halftime deficit for a 3-2 victory over host Wesley on Saturday evening. The win propels St. Mary's into the semifinals for the second straight season.

Wesley's Will Mileski scored both goals for the Wolverines, including the game-opening tally in the 23rd minute. The Wolverines took that 1-0 advantage into the second frame, until St. Mary's reeled off three straight scores beginning with Zach Fonteneot's score in the 59th minute off a feed from Nick Tait. Luke Barber and Juwan Kearson added goals for the Seahawks in the 72nd and 90th minute to give the St. Mary's a 3-1 advantage.
