SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation Dr. Gerry DiBartolo announced on Monday that Scott Buete has accepted an offer to become the next head coach of the men's soccer program. Buete, who succeeds Alex Hargrove, will start at SU on March 17.

"I'm proud to welcome Scott to Salisbury," said DiBartolo. "Scott's credentials stood out among the candidates with his experience at the highest levels of collegiate and professional soccer. He has an established record of being an outstanding recruiter and know he will attract outstanding student-athletes to Salisbury University.  I believe that his knowledge will help SU men's soccer continue to be one of the top programs in Division III."

Buete arrives to SU after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons. Buete helped lead the Terrapins to the 2018 National Championship. During the national title run, the Maryland backline did not give up a goal in any game during the NCAA Tournament.

Throughout his tenure with Maryland, Buete helped engineer one of the best teams in the Big Ten. The Terps won three Big Ten Tournament Championships, two Big Ten Regular Season Championships and appeared in six NCAA Tournaments.

During his time as a coach at College Park, four Terrapins were named All-Americans, 13 MLS SuperDraft selections, four MLS homegrown signees and two U.S. Men's National Team players.

Buete was a standout defender for the Terrapins during his playing career. A three-year captain from 2001-03, he was a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (now United Soccer Coaches) All-American with first-team honors in 2003. He led Maryland to two College Cup appearances, an ACC Tournament Championship in 2002 and an ACC Regular Season Championship in 2003.

After graduating from Maryland, Buete was drafted ninth overall by the Chicago Fire in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. He also played for the Atlanta Silverbacks, Charleston Battery and Tampa Bay Rowdies of the United Soccer League and the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

Buete also has experience in the club levels with two years as the Academy Director at the Baton Rouge Soccer Club and the past five years with Maryland United.

"I am absolutely thrilled to join the Sea Gull family as the head men's soccer coach," stated Buete. "Salisbury University and the entire athletics community has a strong winning tradition and I can't wait to be a part of it. Having grown up in Maryland, I will take great pride in wearing the Salisbury crest and donning the maroon and gold. I want to thank Dr. DiBartolo, President Charles Wight and the rest of the SU administration for this amazing opportunity and can't wait to get started."

Buete graduated from the University of Maryland in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in marketing.
